TCC Podcast #450: Finding Followers and Clients on LinkedIn with Matt Barker

June 3, 2025·1 hr 2 min·4 clips
Matt Barker reveals the three-part LinkedIn system — profile, network, posts — and the DM trick that puts your content at the top of a prospect's feed.
LinkedIn gets the main chair. The episode starts with a useful comparison: cold email lets a copywriter choose prospects directly, while posting on social asks the right clients to notice over time. The host keeps the talk practical. Copywriters may be testing TikTok, Threads, Pinterest, Instagram, or LinkedIn, but this conversation settles on LinkedIn as a main place to find clients. Matt explains the funnel without dressing it up. Some posts build belief in the person, some show expertise, and some prove results so clients have a reason to trust the offer. That trust piece is where things get less tidy. A niche audience can help, but it can also make the account feel boxed in. The host pushes on that problem. Maybe one account follows only potential clients and another stays broader, though even he admits that test would be hard to prove cleanly. Matt is thinking long term. He wants LinkedIn to become a place where clients find him, so he can do less DM work and less constant outbound later. Early on, he says, that is not how it works. The reach is not there yet, so conversations and outreach still have to do real work. The useful lesson is pretty grounded. LinkedIn needs audience, credibility, and direct relationship work before it starts feeling lighter. The ending stays sensible too. Matt does not tell copywriters to copy one content style and expect the same result. Borrow what fits, try what feels true, and pay attention to what actual readers respond to.

A grounded LinkedIn client acquisition discussion for copywriters weighing DMs, content, trust, and inbound momentum.

LinkedIn is treated here as a practical client acquisition channel for copywriters, with Matt Barker focusing on the mix that matters early on: direct outreach, profile credibility, and content that gives prospects a reason to trust the person behind the service.
