Radio DJ Mary Lucia & Opinions on Lucinda Williams

February 6, 2026·51 min·1 clip
Mary Lucia explains why she deliberately broke playlist rules at Minnesota Public Radio and created a rogue daily feature to play whatever she wanted.
Mary Lucia starts with nerve. The episode opens with a Lucinda Williams new-music review, then shifts into Mary talking about memoir, radio taste, and the stubborn pleasure of playing what she loves. Asked whether a DJ should play a favorite band outside the approved list, she does not dress it up: break the rules, but learn them first. That is the radio lesson sitting under the whole conversation. Jim DeRogatis and Greg ask about the machinery behind music radio, where lists, station formats, and program directors decide what gets through. Mary is not selling obedience. She says she was probably a nightmare for a music program director because time in the booth gave her the nerve to bend the format without pretending she did not understand it. The Current is where that attitude gets tested. Still thinking of the station as Adult Album Alternative, she hears how stiff the category sounds, and everyone laughs because it does sound ridiculous. Somebody needed to play Slade. So she carved out room with No Apologies, an every day 4 o'clock feature built on the idea that guilty pleasures are mostly a fake category. Her taste does not ask permission. That 2 to 6 stretch gets a little stranger and better for it, especially next to younger DJs who were more cautious about stepping outside the lines. The conversation stays loose. Adult Album Alternative comes off less like a genre and more like a lab label stuck on a stack of records. Then Oasis walks in through the side door. Mary mentions the band, and Jim and Greg come back to the memoir story about Liam Gallagher and a DJ booth at First Avenue. She seems almost surprised the story survived the edit. A few memories made her pause, but they belonged because they came from the same stretch of life and work. That is where the memoir talk lands best: not on tidy career highlights, but on awkward stories and station-floor choices that show how a DJ earns her taste.
