New Buried Treasures

January 30, 2026·50 min·3 clips
A Mississippi gospel group once called 'Staples Junior Singers' reunites decades later on David Byrne's label.
Buried Treasures means new underground music here, and Jim comes in hot enough to make a 40-minute space rock opera sound perfectly sensible. Greg is up for it right away. The band is Eye Captain, a tip from Ken Rothman in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who told Jim he was going to love this. Jim does, but first he has to complain. He enjoys a little underground mystery. What he does not enjoy is spending 20 or 30 minutes trying to find out who made a record and coming up nearly empty. Basic band facts should not feel hidden behind a locked door. What he does piece together is part of the charm. Eye Captain seems to be veteran Boston area musicians who first got together to play Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here in concert. That shared Floyd workout appears to have grown into a real project, with six core players, guests, and female backing vocals opening up the sound. Jim hears the family tree right away. These are slow progressive and psychedelic rock pieces, built for patience rather than quick hooks. The featured track has been hanging around as a reference since Jane and Milo in the Afterglow surfaced a couple of years earlier. Now it has landed. Jim calls it a space rock opera, and he means that as praise: when prog works, the size feels earned. Greg keeps the whole thing loose, which helps. The fun is hearing two critics follow a listener email into a small scene mystery, then land on why this big odd record works.

As heard by us

A Buried Treasures pick that goes all in on a 40-minute space-rock sprawl.

Sound Opinions uses its Buried Treasures slot to put an underground track in front of listeners, and Jim DeRogatis sounds genuinely sold on the 40-minute space-rock opera he brings in.

Why you'd press play

You want a deep dig that still sounds like two people arguing at the record store.
