Lecture - The Effectiveness of Social Media | Mufti Menk

·51 min·4 clips
Mufti Menk states directly: if the filtered version of yourself makes you happier than the real one, that is a sign you need help.
The phone is not the villain. The host pushes back on the idea that the only religious answer to social media is to call it haram and demand everyone switch off their phones. He starts with the mirror instead. Say alhamdulillah for the face Allah gave you, even if nobody has ever told you that you are good-looking. Then he brings in the knife. Social media can be useful, but careless use can still leave a wound. The danger gets personal fast. Filters thin noses, change faces, reshape features, and make the real self feel disappointing next to something made with a flick. That is the warning. If the fake filtered version brings more comfort than the real one, the host says help is needed before sadness settles in. He leaves room for real medical needs. Correcting eyesight, restoring something abnormal, or dealing with a breathing problem is different from changing a normal feature because social media made it feel unacceptable. So the question becomes why. Why do you want the nose job? Is there breathing trouble, or is the pressure coming from what you see online? He stays direct without turning cold. Brothers and sisters are not being told to hate social media. They are being told not to let it decide whether they feel acceptable. The lecture keeps returning to Allah, the one who made you and whose pleasure matters most. It ends with mercy: anyone who has faltered should seek forgiveness without doubting Allah's forgiveness, because Islam is built on mercy and Allah forgives the one who asks.

As heard by us

A faith-forward reminder to love the self Allah made and correct only what is truly abnormal.

The piece treats social media less like a hard ban and more like a self-respect test: love yourself as Allah made you, and do not turn every insecurity into a problem that needs fixing.
