Lecture - Lessons from the Pre Hijrah Era within Makkah | Mufti Menk

March 6, 2026·1 hr 1 min·5 clips
The Prophet Muhammad, unlettered and in a cave, is embraced by an angel and told to 'Read'—the first revelation of the Quran.
The lecture opens in praise. The host begins with blessings and salutations, praise of Allah, and a warm address to beloved brothers and sisters before moving to the time revelation came. Concern comes before confrontation. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is shown as chosen by Allah and already carrying a real worry for his people. Then justice enters the story. The host recalls an outsider, a businessman who had been cheated, and a promise made by people who gathered to protect the rights of those who came from afar. Muhammad was young then, but he was already trusted in matters of fairness. That trust hurts more later. On Mount Safa, he calls his family members and tribesmen together. He asks whether they would believe him if he warned them about an enemy beyond the mountain. They say yes, because they know him as truthful, and from where he stands he can see what they cannot see. Then the warning rises. He tells them about a coming reckoning, punishment if they keep going as they are, and the need to worship the Almighty alone. The people push back against correction. The wealthy, the cronies, and others are there. Abu Lahab rejects him sharply. The host does not leave the story far away. He brings it into the listener's life. Do we thank correction? My brothers, my sisters, do we love truth only when it praises us, or also when it exposes what has to change? The lesson stays close. A community can honor a truthful person in easy matters, then resist him when truth calls for worship, justice, and an end to wrong.

As heard by us

A sermon on truth-telling, justice, and the duty to correct wrongdoing.

This sermon revisits the Prophet Muhammad's life before revelation, set against a Makkah shaped by injustice, and treats truthfulness as something people already knew about him.
