Ex-Google Director Reveals the Future of Search: AI Overviews, Zero-Click, and What's Coming Next

Google's AI Overviews reportedly trigger on 88% of informational queries and cut organic clicks by 70%.
AI is the starting point. The host brings in Brad Retherall, introduced as an ex-Google director and owner of Esquire Digital and GBP Expert, for a practical look at search right now. Brad points to Google I.O. in May earlier this year and names Sundar and Elizabeth Reed while talking about how AI is changing local marketing strategy. GBPs come up, but the conversation spends more time on local marketing, search optimization, and a basic question that gets ignored too often: does the work help anyone? Brad keeps coming back to the human part: perspective, value, intuition, and having an actual take. He is not anti-AI. His agency still uses AI for a lot of website content, but not by blindly prompting and posting. The work needs shaping. His example is spending 30 to 40 minutes pushing back, adding preferences, changing the angle, and writing from a real point of view. That is where the output starts to feel useful. Google may not care that AI helped write the page if the page answers a real question and gives people something worthwhile. The mood is honest: digital marketing sounds tough, interesting, and nerdy right now, especially if SEO and AEO tracking are your thing. AI can speed things up, but local marketers still have to use judgment before anything goes live.
