It's Only a Podcast - A Horror Movie Review Show · Christian Estabrook and Ian Nichols

Overkill: Saw 3D AKA Saw: The Final Chapter (2010)

·1 hr 47 min·10 clips
Christian Estabrook comes in sounding a bit like a host shaking off the dust. He and Elle Willers start with what matters. Pancakes or waffles becomes a genuine debate, and Elle lands on waffles. Christian argues waffles have the higher ceiling, while pancakes are more dependable. That opening sets the pace for the rest of the episode. The show then swings into *Overkill: Saw 3D AKA Saw: The Final Chapter*. The seventh *Saw* movie turns into a franchise stress test. Christian and Elle keep coming back to Hoffman, because the franchise keeps coming back to Hoffman. They talk through how odd it is that he is still so central this late in the run. Christian says he was a little warmer to the Hoffman storyline in the previous movie. Here, though, the character feels like a problem the series never quite wants to solve cleanly. Elle pushes back by reading him as a guy who mostly stumbles, scrambles, and almost gets caught. That keeps the discussion funny without letting the movie off the hook. They agree that this movie does not seem all that interested in giving Hoffman anything truly strong to do. The rivalry with Jill gets folded into the same complaint. The plot keeps trying to make a chase out of tracking her down. The hosts are not convinced the movie earns the weight it wants from that chase. Christian also suggests nobody has their heart in this one. That goes a long way toward explaining why the whole thing feels tired instead of huge. Even when the conversation gets exasperated, it stays loose and playful. The episode closes with plugs, sign-offs, and the familiar reminder to keep telling yourself it is only a podcast.
