Episode 214 - The Strangers: Chapter 1 / The Descent (2005) GUEST: Miriam Geiger

Christian and Ian open episode 214 with a bone nerd tangent that turns into a small lecture on the xiphoid process. It is the kind of sideways start this show likes. From there they move into a horror review that sets up Saw level expectations and then knocks them down. The violence comes fast, and it is gone fast, which becomes part of the joke. They spend a lot of time on the movie's running, walking, and hiding. They also call out the awkward editing around sex and nudity. At times, the film feels like it could have been cut to a PG 13 shape. That is not praise. The dialogue takes just as much heat. They keep coming back to how much of the movie feels like bad writing wrapped around a simple survival setup. The diner stop gives them plenty to work with. The flyers, menus, and repeated handoffs become one of the episode's running bits. They also entertain a read that the town may be part of a larger scam or conspiracy. The movie's convenient car trouble and other little obstacles help that idea along. The conversation moves between plot mechanics and comic disbelief. Even when they wander, they keep finding specific things to attack or defend. The episode closes with another horror comedy detour and a tease for Sasquatch Sunset and Harry and the Hendersons. The result is messy but sharp, funny without feeling empty, and opinionated without sounding rehearsed.
