It's Only a Podcast - A Horror Movie Review Show · Christian Estabrook and Ian Nichols

Episode 212 - Abigail / Who Can Kill a Child? (1976)

·1 hr 24 min·1 clip
Civil War shows us stripping context for social media—we're already doing it with every image we see.
They open with typewriters. Christian Estabrook and Ian Nichols spend the first stretch trading memories, guesses, and jokes about how hard a real typewriter takes to use, then drift into a Tom Hanks tangent that gives the episode its loose, inside-joke rhythm. The movie talk comes later. Once the conversation lands on Abigail, they treat the setup as deliberately ridiculous and start picking apart the huge ass manse, the awkward team dynamics, and the way the whole thing depends on everyone being a little off. The crew is a mess. Dan Stevens, Melissa Barrera, the tech girly, the muscle man, the driver, and the ex-marine all get quick, comic sizing-up as the hosts map who seems useful, who seems dangerous, and who seems like dead weight. Angus Cloud steals heat. His slurred, convincingly dumb driver performance gets singled out as the most believable part of the ensemble, and the hosts keep circling back to how perfectly he sells the idiot energy. Abigail is the problem. The show keeps coming back to the fact that she is clearly not a normal little girl, especially after the movie opens with a decapitation that sets the blood-soaked mood before the real scheming even starts. That lands fast. Christian and Ian like the movie most when they can call out the bad planning, laugh at the absurd mechanics, and still give credit when a performance or idea actually works. They do not smooth it over. The banter stays quick, digressive, and a little chaotic, but it keeps snapping back to the film instead of drifting away from it completely. It works because they are blunt. Their judgments are plain enough to hear and funny enough to stick, even when the conversation wanders through side jokes and self-correction. The closer stays playful. The episode ends in the show’s familiar register, with plugs, callbacks, and the reminder to keep telling yourself it’s only a podcast.

As heard by us

A loose horror conversation that turns typewriter chatter and mansion chaos into a sharp, funny movie discussion.

Episode 212 begins with typewriter banter and easy chemistry before settling into movie talk once Abigail comes up. The best part is the stretch that digs into the mansion setup, the mismatched crew inside it, and Angus Cloud's slurred but convincing performance.
