·34 min·3 clips
The Nazis' 'Final Solution' used poisonous gas chambers to kill thousands daily, with children dying first.
The episode opens with hosts explaining this is a special BlitzoCast format designed as a resource for teachers, with shorter, more digestible episodes about World War II stories. They introduce three hosts: Leonardo Cervera Navas, Hugo Cañete, and Dani Galpe. The first story focuses on the Podgorska sisters - Fusia (16) and Elena (7) - Catholic Poles who began helping the Jewish Diamant family after the Nazi invasion. When the Diamants were forced into the Przemyśl ghetto, Fusia smuggled them food by bribing guards with jewelry. After the Nazis began deporting Jews to Auschwitz, Fusia hid Max Diamant who escaped from a transport. She eventually rented a house with a large attic where she hid 13 Jews total, including people who blackmailed their way in. The group survived by repairing and selling clothes, with Fusia walking kilometers to buy food. German soldiers nearly discovered them when nurses moved into the house below the attic. The Jews were liberated when the Russian army arrived in July 1944. Fusia married Max and moved to America, receiving Israel's 'Righteous Among the Nations' award. The second story features Adolfo Kaminski, born in Argentina but living in France. After his mother was killed by the Gestapo, the 16-year-old joined the French Resistance. Using chemistry knowledge, he became a master forger creating false documents for Jews. His most notable achievement was producing 900 documents in three days to save 300 Jewish children from a raid. He later forged German documents for French intelligence. Kaminski is credited with saving approximately 14,000 lives before dying in 2023 at age 98. The episode concludes with hosts reflecting on these 'angels of the Second World War' and directing listeners to the full series.
