Episode #73: Exiting Your Life's Work with Cameron Bishop, Raincatcher

·39 min·1 clip
Fall down seven, get up eight—that's resilience.
Resilience sets the tone. Cameron Bishop calls it his superpower and ties it to the old Japanese line about falling seven times and getting up eight. His current work is helping owners exit companies that may be their main source of generational wealth. The host keeps the conversation grounded, asking for real examples from running small and large companies instead of staying in leadership theory. Bishop comes back to servant leadership and to wanting to work with other people, a style he says he has not always found elsewhere. Exit work can sound like a narrow finance lane. He pushes back on that. Yes, there are dollars, percentages, negotiation, and financial analysis, but that is only part of the job. A buyer has to fit. Bishop describes part of the work as a match.com role, because the right buyer has to make sense beyond price. Owners care about their people. In his experience, every owner he met felt real loyalty to employees and customers, even while preparing to sell. Sometimes the lower bid wins because the buyer fits better on culture, management style, mission, vision, and values. The process gets emotional too. Bishop calls part of it Dr. Phil work because selling a company takes time and can wear on people. By the end, he hopes people remember that he valued them, listened, and gave them room to shape the company.
