Stack Overflow users don't trust AI. They're using it anyway

December 15, 2025·1 hr 5 min·5 clips
Stack Overflow's CEO declared a company emergency and pulled 10% of staff to tackle the ChatGPT threat.
Stack Overflow is under pressure. The host opens with a simple, uncomfortable problem: before ChatGPT, Stack Overflow was where developers went when they got stuck. After ChatGPT, AI can compete with that habit. Prashanth Chandrasekhar has to defend a community built around human answers at the same time software can generate code, working apps, and forum replies at scale. This is not a tidy platform story. AI-generated answers made the forum worse, and moderators pushed back over whether they could remove them fast enough. Then Stack Overflow partnered with OpenAI. Some users deleted content because they did not want it used for OpenAI training, and Stack Overflow banned a number of them. The host keeps poking at the same sore spot. If people are the reason the community works, AI is not just another tool. It changes the deal. Prashanth argues that Stack Overflow still has jobs to do. Developers can show they understand fundamentals, connect with other people, and make sense of a job market being shaken by AI. The Indeed partnership becomes part of that pitch: give the site a reason to matter even when asking questions is not the main reflex anymore. The host does not let the neat version slide. He presses on whether a people-centered community can absorb AI without burning the trust that made it useful. That is the test. Stack Overflow has to make room for developers who use AI while protecting the judgment, moderation, and shared learning that AI keeps messing with. The result is a business problem, but it is also a governance problem. The people creating the value are the same people being asked to accept the new bargain.
