Mary Bartell, 91, saw green rubber gloves and knew instantly her life was in grave danger.
This section starts plainly with Mary Bartell. She was supposed to go exercise, the same everyday plan she usually had, which makes what Jackie found feel even worse. The door was open. Mary was inside on the floor, still alive, and the normal morning was gone in a second. She needed medical help fast. At the hospital, once she came to, Mary told them to call police. The reason was simple and chilling: there was a man. The episode gives Mary room to speak. Her answers are small and human, from spelling Bartell to saying she was born on March 3rd, 1927. That matters. It keeps the case from flattening into victims, families, and a sequence of awful events. The hosts do not rush it. They talk about how hard the story was to organize, and you can hear why. Near the end, the episode moves into victim impact statements, and the tone gets heavier because it should. There are a lot of them. The host warns listeners they are long, then says she wants those statements to have a platform. The families speak for themselves. There is grief, anger, memory, faith, and the sick feeling of watching him in court. It is messy in the way real loss is messy. The ending feels less like a wrap-up than a quiet room after people have finally been allowed to speak.
