EP 385 | Money Warrior with Angela Lawrence

·34 min·3 clips
Kimberly Seldon recounts how her editor had to tell her three times to ask for a raise because it never occurred to her.
Kimberly opens with real affection. She brings on Angela, someone she adores from her magazine years, and a former editor at Style at Home magazine. Then the warmth gives way to a very practical money talk. Angela describes learning about money the hard, useful way over the last eight years, and how that gave her enough confidence to take different risks later in life. Her advice is plain. Nobody will care about your money more than you do, even when looking at it feels awkward or scary. For creatives, that stings in a good way. Angela talks about money as something worth fighting for because it is tied to worth, freedom, and the kind of future a person wants. The old safety net is not what it was. Magazine work and large companies no longer promise the dependable path people used to expect. A pension is not a plan. So Angela pushes for creative professionals to think harder about how they earn, protect, and structure money while the industry keeps moving. Her own example is the triplex. While she was still at Style at Home, she bought one and lived in part of it. That home also became an asset, with one unit later used as an Airbnb and another held by a long term tenant. She gave up space, yes. Then she asks the better question: how much space do you really need? The tradeoff is the point. Less room now can mean more control later. Kimberly and Angela keep the tone warm, even playful, but the money lesson does not get softened.

As heard by us

A triplex, a creative career, and a clearer view of money shape a grounded case for financial flexibility.

Financial flexibility comes into focus through Angela Lawrence's triplex setup: she lives on the main floor, keeps a long-term tenant in one apartment, and runs an Airbnb in another.
