Catalina

August 2, 2023·37 min·2 clips
Cassie reveals her full name—Cassandra Penelope Wallace—and notes her mother gave her a Greek name meaning 'cursed to see the future but never believed.'
The season's ghosts get there before the refuge does. Blood, infection, Major Chavez, Wayne, and Michaela all crowd the cold open, so by the time Catalina appears, shelter already feels suspicious. Then the gate shuts. The island has a curfew now. Hundreds of civilians arrive on official transports, with more coming in on private vessels, and safety starts sounding like procedure. Someone says the locked gates keep the waiting crowd calm after dark. Maybe. It also sounds a lot like containment. Cassie is already changing shape. She gives Julian the name Penny, then lets Cassandra Penelope hang between them like a joke with bad luck attached. Her shoes are not hers. The climb away from the crowd is practical at first, all bad tread and worn socks, but it turns intimate fast because neither of them can talk normally while she keeps checking behind her. Julian presses gently. Cassie admits she was recently with someone dangerous who should be dead, and even saying it does not give her much comfort. In this world, almost definitely dead is not much of a boundary. The quake comes back in pieces. Julian remembers the underpass, the public art excuse that turns into tagging, and a collapsing neighborhood that somehow leaves him alive. Cassie talks about her mother, Greek names, and Cassandra seeing the future while no one believed her. The joke lands, then keeps hurting. Around them, the refugee system keeps moving. The real scene is smaller and sharper: two people deciding how much truth can fit between strangers. Catalina is not a clean refuge. It is a gate, and Cassie reaches it with a borrowed name, a buried secret, and the fear that the dead are still following.
