Some great Sports Talk podcasts to get to know
After a loss you didn't see coming, the drive home can feel longer than the game. You want somebody to explain the final ten minutes, or argue about the coach, or just talk about the team in a way that makes the result easier to carry. Sports talk podcasts are built for that hour. The best ones explain what happened, argue about what it means, and know the names well enough to make you feel like a regular.
The range is wider than the big national brands suggest. One feed is a Detroit radio show fighting about draft philosophy. Another is a Swedish hockey conversation about club finances, and another is a Sioux Falls host chatting with a goalie who has just signed a pro contract. The industry is expanding too. On September 1, 2026, Netflix announced renewals for its initial original podcast lineup. On September 16, 2026, the podcast network Bleav claimed it produces more than 200 episodes a day across more than 550 shows. On July 14, 2026, Spotify reported that US soccer-podcast listening was up nearly 400% since that summer's tournament began.
More supply does not settle what listeners want. Fans in online threads this year discussed video editions, running jokes and betting chatter. Some value all three, and others want them gone. This guide sorts the shows by the job they do, so you can pick the kind of company you want. For the wider field, the Sports page covers the whole category.
Hometown radio, still mid-argument
Local sports radio is the genre's backbone, and its pleasure is familiarity. On The Valenti Show's Best of Lions on 97.1 The Ticket: Draft for need, or best player available?, the Detroit hosts pick apart Brad Holmes's "best player available" talk. One of them repeats the show's position three times in a row: "We want the Lions to draft a tackle or an edge." Then they read listener texts that push back, including one arguing that the Lions simply draft the player they like most. It is loud and stubborn, and it is good fun if you know the roster.
Boston gets two different temperatures. Joe Murray's Instant reaction: Celtics blowout the Pelicans 144-118 and lock up the 2 seed in the East - 4/10/26 runs 41 minutes and drifts happily into golf-course cigars and neighborhood bars. In Brian Robb joins the show - 4/17/26, the guest says he expects Joe Mazzulla to play nine guys at most in the playoff series. Boston Has Entered The Chat is brisker. In Who Can Lead The 2026 Boston Red Sox With Deven Marrero, the former player names Chris Young as the veteran he leaned on in the clubhouse.
Interviews can lift these shows above noise. On Dukes & Bell's Hr3 - Diana Russini Resigns from The Athletic & CJ McCollum Joins the Show, CJ McCollum describes playoff basketball for a young team plainly: "in a heavyweight fight, you're going to get hit." Query & Schultz Podcast shows the looser side of the local hour. In Colts are NFL's best, Aaron Nesmith extension, World Series set! | Episode 258 - 10.21.25, the hosts record from a sandwich shop and order cheesesteaks between football arguments.
When you want the play explained
Some listeners want to understand the game better, not just to feel better about it. The Ryen Russillo Podcast gives the most of that here. In The Packers' Ceiling, the Contenders' Biggest Flaws, and the Best Play Callers With Ted Nguyen, an 82-minute episode, the guest's film work leads a tour of contenders' weaknesses, and defensive coordinators' rankings of offensive play-callers come up. The show also pitches a half-serious theory: "Do we round up with youth on defense and round down with age on defense?" Its listener-mail "Life Advice" segment, which in that episode includes a marital argument about cyclists, is the release valve. Whether it charms you or slows you down is a matter of taste.
The Al Galdi Podcast is the patient version for Washington fans. In Episode 1,299: conversation with NFL Draft analyst Jon Ledyard on WRs and DEs for Washington at No. 7 and more, Ledyard explains why he ranks Malachi Lawrence as the top edge defender, as of April 9, 2026. In Episode 1,305, Galdi recites a reliever's back-and-forth waiver claims between the Mets and Nationals date by date, which is either exhausting or delightful. Stripe Sports puts a prospect on the mic. In its interview with San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson, he says he needs to vary his press technique at the next level. More football depth lives on the Football page, and campus coverage on the College Sports page.
Small leagues, long memories
Some of the warmest listening comes from places national shows skip. Calling All Sports is out of Sioux Falls. CAS 4-2-1-2026 Josh Kotai-Augustana Hockey Goalie (Signed with NY Islanders) runs 26 minutes, and the conversation turns to Kotai's father, who also coaches him. Nuanez Now covers western Montana. In Nuanez Now April 16, 2026 - Hour 2 - CWDKS, Dave Kenkel, Aiden Schrader, the Montana rugby sevens team explains its first trip to nationals in a long time and how listeners can help fund it; the Rugby page goes further. Another hour previews Montana State's spring rodeo.
The Armchair GM's Sports Network treats junior hockey as front-page news. Its OHL Overtime recap of Soo 1 vs Kitchener 5 comes live from the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium with the game's TV color commentator as co-host. After a Sabres 8-7 win, its Sabres Semantics host reports that 94.1% of poll respondents graded the game an A. See the Hockey page. Dr. Cavil's 'INSIDE THE HBCU SPORTS LAB' covers HBCU baseball and administration with real institutional knowledge. In one episode a co-host objects to a poll ranking with a cheerful "I demand a recount." Clemson Sports Talk can make a box score sing: in The "Tiger Gem" Edition, the host lingers on a nine-inning, 78-pitch Clemson outing with 67 strikes. The Baseball page has more.
Beyond the American dial
Sport (Podcast), from Aftonbladet, mixes formats. In Wikegård om NHL: ”Varför ska vi släppa in dem?”, the Djurgården guest explains how dependent his club is on ticket sales and objects to how NHL teams claim prospects. Todo Deporte Canario is Canary Islands football radio with the interruptions left in. In TDC 19-03-26, rain disrupts the weekend schedule, and a lower-division coach explains why he keeps a big squad when unpaid players work night shifts. For more, try the Soccer page.
Where betting enters
Betting talk varies a lot, so know what you are choosing. The Ryen Russillo Podcast includes a "sharp" pick segment in its September 12, 2025 episode, and that episode has responsible-gambling disclaimers near the end. The Drive with Stoerner and Hughley lists best-bets segments among its episode titles. CzabeCast carries sportsbook advertising, though its solo episode So Many Dumb Ideas On 'Fixing' the NBA's Tanking Problem includes an argument about tanking: Czaban's fix is "Worst record, first pick." The Sports Betting page covers the specialist shows, and the Fantasy Sports page covers the lineup crowd.

8 shows, described rather than listed
Each one comes with a short write-up and the role it plays in this guide.
The Ringer's national flagship sports-talk show. Longer-form interview-plus-take register that distinguishes podcast-native sports talk from radio-first variant. The slate's entry point for sports talk not recorded for a regional FM broadcast.
Washington Commanders coverage. Single-team focus episode after episode at a depth no national show can sustain. The slate's strongest example of dedicated-team-specialist sports talk.
Cleveland sports (Browns, Cavs, Guardians) via 92.3 The Fan. Clean example of regional FM sports radio filling the podcast slate without leaving its broadcast format.
Los Angeles sports across Lakers, Clippers, Rams, Dodgers, college football. Multi-team city-anchored format at the speed FM sports radio requires.
Atlanta sports (Falcons, Braves, Hawks) and Atlanta-area college football. Working examples of how the format moves through a day's local sports stories.
Boston sports (Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics). Quick, news-pegged segments aimed at New England fans tracking multiple teams in season.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities athletics. A beat mainstream sports media systematically under-covers. The slate's strongest example of specialty sports coverage you cannot reliably get elsewhere.
Detroit sports across Tigers, Lions, Pistons, Red Wings via 97.1 The Ticket. Detroit-anchored regional sports radio in the same format as the other regional shows.
Where to start
4 routes in, one per reader
*The Giannis-Knicks Flirtation* is a clean entry: long-form, take-and-interview, podcast-native rather than radio-first.
*Adam Peters discusses his thinking and process with No. 7-overall pick* is a representative episode — a single team covered at depth no national show can match.
The slate's only specialist on Historically Black Colleges and Universities athletics. Recent episodes are a good starting point for coverage mainstream sports media skips.
Cleveland sports radio at its native cadence — Browns drafts, Cavs playoffs, daily callers. Pick whichever regional show is closest to a city you follow.
Glossary
Words hosts use without explaining
Sub-genre comprising terrestrial sports-radio shows recorded for podcast distribution. Same hosts, same callers, same betting reads, same hour-block format. The bulk of "sports talk" by feed count is this format.
Sports-talk shows produced directly for podcast distribution rather than as radio recordings. Longer-form, interview-driven, less constrained by broadcast clock. *The Ryen Russillo Podcast* (Ringer) is the slate's example.
Format that covers one team episode after episode at sustained depth. *The Al Galdi Podcast* (Washington Commanders) is the slate's exemplar. Distinct from multi-team regional shows.
Sports beat covering Historically Black Colleges and Universities athletics — systematically under-covered by mainstream U.S. sports media. *Dr. Cavil's INSIDE THE HBCU SPORTS LAB* is the slate's specialist entry.
Sports-talk variant that interviews voice-of-the-team broadcasters, regional college coaches, and minor-league personnel. Coverage of parts of the sports world national shows skip. *Calling All Sports* is the corpus exemplar (not on this featured slate).
Slate-level observation: the bulk of sports-talk podcasting is regional FM radio with the show recorded for download. The format is consistent across cities; specifics differ. This shapes recommendation logic: pick a show anchored to a city you follow.
