Getting into Rugby podcasts
The final whistle goes and the arguing starts. Rugby podcasts fill the stretch between one match and the next. They replay the try nobody expected, work out why a scrum kept folding, or let a former player describe a dressing room the cameras never saw. Some listeners want explanation. Plenty just want company on the drive home.
The range is wide. A panel of ex-internationals can be shamelessly partisan and still sharp about selection. A supporters' show for one club can put the question the press release avoided to its chief executive. A long interview can stay with a player through injury, missed selection and worse. The form covers both codes, from Six Nations weekends to club grounds, Salford and the NRL.
Listeners argue about the mix. Some love the banter, while others find the running jokes stale and go elsewhere for tactics. Some will pay a monthly fee for a favourite show, and others refuse to manage one more subscription. Confident talk about club finances draws praise and pushback in the same threads. Money is also moving closer to the microphone: in February 2026 it was announced that one prominent rugby show's studio would carry a sponsor's name during the Six Nations.
The weekend, argued over
The big panel shows are built for Monday. The Rugby Pod, with Jim Hamilton, Andy Goode, Dan Biggar and producer Rob, turned #28 Wildest Six Nations Round Ever | Scotland Stun France, Italy Rock England (10 March 2026) into a Scottish victory lap. One host, after years of backing Scotland, admits: "I'm putting my neck on the line. I'm putting my credibility." The gloating sits alongside real arguments about a citing and about England's leadership, plus a sponsor read. If you enjoy the company, it is a warm room. If you came for diagrams, it is a long one.
The 42 Rugby Weekly works the other side of the weekend. Six Nations Super Saturday Preview was recorded at Lansdowne Rugby Club with the Aviva Stadium behind the hosts. It moves from the buzz around the ground to an Ireland selection one voice calls "very predictable". Flats and Shanks, from former Saracens flatmates David Flatman and Tom Shanklin, wanders further. Season 9 - Episode 16 spends happy minutes on prepaid electricity keys and phone cards. Season 9 - Episode 15 gets serious about Wales, England and a commentator's problem of judging a penalty with no replay to call on.
Two shows talk back to the professionals. On Rucks, Mauls & Oval Balls, S2 Ep 33 - Is This The Start Of A Rugby Civil War? finds hosts Dave and Rory criticising Andy Goode's remarks about the YouTube analyst Squidge Rugby and objecting to "gatekeeping the sport to those who've played it". Elite Rugby Banter, three fantasy draft managers with Springbok loyalties, spends Episode 312 - Italy and Scotland Prevail Against the Odds treating England's performance against Italy as, in one host's words, "a reflection on the selections" more than on the team. Clubs, regions and the people who stay loyal
Narrow the lens to one team and the conversation changes. The Welsh Regional Rugby Appreciation Podcast detours to read out a craft beer's tasting notes, then does its homework. In Mann, what a Carré on - WRRAP - Welsh Rugby, one host has timed the gaps between Welsh forwards' defensive interventions. Another warns that Reece Carré's individual brilliance shouldn't be Wales's attacking plan.
The Rugby Wrap, a Western Force show, asks hard questions politely. Season 7 Episode 6 with Force CEO Niamh O'Connor puts a "survival fears" headline to her and asks "what do you say to the sceptics" about a signing from league. Huddy Sports goes smaller and closer. In Huddy Hui - Episode 181, commentator Brad Hudson hears number eight Mika Alefatu explain that he runs his first carry hard "just to, like, wake me up".
Connacht has its chroniclers. The latest listed Craggy Rugby podcast episodes date from 2024. Still, Stormers review May 2024 is a fond farewell to the old Clan Stand, including a story of hugging a stranger who turned out to be the try scorer's father. For the governing body's own view, the Principality Welsh Rugby Union Podcast offers access rather than scrutiny. Meet the Under 20s From school partners to international teammates includes a reminder that one gifted young player "is a schoolboy", balancing exams with professional rugby.
Careers, heard at length
When the result fades, interviews take over. What a Lad, hosted by James Marshall, gives players room to be funny before they are serious. In Patrick Tuipulotu- What a Lad, Tuipulotu recalls learning of his 2019 World Cup selection from a phone buzzing in his pocket during a haircut. Cam Suafoa- What a Lad is harder listening. Marshall asks whether Suafoa wants to talk about his health, and the Blues loose forward explains plainly that his sarcoma has returned and he is terminally ill.
Millsy & Guy, a drive-time show from former Black Caps bowler Kyle Mills and Guy Heveldt, makes space for long sit-downs. In Tuesday Feature | Taine Randell (7/7/26), the former All Blacks captain reflects that coach John Hart "needed a more experienced captain". Tuesday Feature | Sir Michael Jones (30/6/26) explores the conflict Jones felt over Sunday fixtures.

OTB Rugby's 'He has been written in the history books of women's rugby!' : Fiona Hayes and Alison Miller pay tribute to Philip Doyle remembers the coach who led Ireland to the 2013 Grand Slam and a 2014 World Cup win over New Zealand. One former player recalls how he "had to fight people and knock down doors" for the team. Speak the language
The fifteen-a-side code of rugby. Governing body: World Rugby. Major competitions: Six Nations (Northern Hemisphere), Rugby Championship (Southern Hemisphere), Premiership (England), United Rugby Championship (URC), Champions Cup (Europe), Super Rugby Pacific.
The thirteen-a-side code, separated from union in 1895. Major competitions: NRL (Australia/New Zealand), Super League (Northern England/France), State of Origin (Queensland vs New South Wales). Contact rules and scoring differ significantly from union.
A method of restarting play in rugby union (also used in league with differences) after a minor infringement. Eight forwards bind together and compete for possession against the opposing eight. Scrum penalties are common and tactically significant — a poor scrum game can lose a Test match.
Annual rugby union tournament between England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, and Italy. Runs February–March. The Grand Slam (five wins from five) and Triple Crown (home-nations wins) are internal sub-competitions. As of 2026 the format is expanding into a broader Nations Championship structure.
