Inside the world of Nonprofit & Philanthropy podcasts

A hospital foundation phones donors who hold endowed funds to ask whether they would release more of that money for current priorities. A charity fundraiser skips asking a lottery funder for the full four hundred thousand pounds and first secures a written pledge of twenty-five thousand from a smaller funder. Nonprofit and philanthropy podcasts are at their best inside decisions like these, where generosity becomes a budget line, a board vote, a job advert and a story somebody has to agree to have told about them.

The range is wider than the category name suggests. It holds a fundraising school's research-minded interviews, a coach's blunt sessions with practitioners, a consultant's conversations with foundation chiefs, a British trade weekly, two hosts trading notes on AI and donor data, and a solo teacher of advocacy. Nearly all are made for people who do the work rather than people who write the cheques. Several come from firms selling services to that same audience. That doesn't disqualify them, but it is worth noticing whose method is being recommended.

Podcasting itself is hardly niche. Edison Research reported in March 2026 that 58% of Americans aged 12 and over had consumed a podcast in the previous month, a figure about the medium as a whole. The sharper arguments are about control. AP reported in June 2025 on GoFundMe's effort to widen access to donor-advised funds, which are accounts where charitable money can wait before it reaches a charity. By March 2026 the Chronicle of Philanthropy was examining disputes over transfers between fund providers. Alongside those run newer arguments about AI and an older one about whose hardship gets used to raise money.

How the ask gets made

First Day Podcast, from The Fund Raising School, is the most classroom-like show here and wears it lightly. In How Great Fundraisers Ask Donors for Transformational Gifts, host Bill Stanczykiewicz puts the question beginners keep asking: how do you know it is time to discuss a very large gift? The reply is usefully unglamorous. Check whether the donor has relationships across the organisation, including the executive director and the president, all hearing the same account of the mission. As the episode puts it: "Is somebody just talking with you? That's probably not 50 million."

Nonprofit Lowdown is coaching with its sleeves rolled up, as a title like #402 - Your board isn't lazy. They're uninstructed. suggests. Its pair, #404 - The DAF Money You're Probably Missing and #403 - DAF Donor Targeting Playbook, approaches donor-advised funds from the fundraiser's side of the desk. Weigh the advice knowing that near the end of its March 2026 interviews discussed here, the host promotes her own big-gift programme.

Using the Whole Whale - A Nonprofit Podcast gives those funds a cooler hearing. In Are you asking for the right asset? Fundraising Secrets with the Philanthropy Guy, the guest, just back from a DAF summit, is asked whether they are good or bad: "They are a tool. They are a container." The same episode includes a story about someone trying to donate zebras to Dartmouth. The Sales and Marketing pages cover neighbouring craft.

The person in the story

Every appeal borrows somebody's life. Nonprofit Lowdown's #380- No More Poverty Porn in Fundraising with Maria Rio treats that as a question of consent. Ask before the interview, during it and before sharing, and tell people where and for how long their words will be used. A line recalled in the conversation, "we should tell stories from our scars, not our wounds," carries the argument: someone still inside a crisis cannot easily reclaim it as a story of power. In #382- Cracking the Oprah Effect with Kyle Woody, Nonprofit Lowdown hears how unpaid caregivers, men especially, resist the label and describe their care simply as a promise they made.

Running the organisation

From the ask, the scale widens to the organisation that has to spend the money. The Discovery Pod, hosted by Douglas Nelson of The Discovery Group, is the calmest listen here and the most revealing about how foundations actually work. Transforming Healthcare Philanthropy With Mary McPherson, CEO, Oakville Hospital Foundation is rich in operational detail, from those calls to endowed-fund donors to a last gala held in November 2019 under the theme of "doors closing one last time." In Shaping The Future Of Mental Health Leadership With Akela Peoples, CEO, Mental Health Research Canada, closing an office becomes a lesson in governance: it stayed a live board conversation for two years, so nobody was surprised.

Some episodes are recruitment. Opportunity Spotlight: Lions Gate Hospital Foundation With Judy Savage, CEO advertises a newly created director of philanthropy role. It still reports a useful finding: 80% of the foundation's donors above $100,000 first gave under $1,000.

Go Beyond Fundraising: The Podcast for Nonprofits, from Allegiance Group + Pursuant, earns its place with Think Like an Entrepreneur: Revenue Growth & Sustainable Programs for Nonprofits. The episode's best moment is a warning. It describes workforce programmes that promised jobs to people who found "there was no job at the end," because employers were never at the table. The same conversation says the business tripled while cutting 15 employees, a claim listeners may want tested. Nonprofit Lowdown's #381- Building Trust and Psychological Safety in Fundraising with Marcia Beckner lands on the phrase "clear is kind." The Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Workplace Culture pages go further.

The news desk

Third Sector Podcast, a weekly from the UK publication of the same name, brings reporting to the field. In Small charity infrastructure, donation decline and an AI fundraising experiment, Emily Burt walks through the debate that followed after the National Council for Voluntary Organisations cut most of its practical support team. The episode also examines Zozia, an autonomous AI agent built by Ben Cohen to fundraise for his London Marathon run for Dogs for Good. It has its own email account and pitched itself to Third Sector. How to approach safeguarding concerns is sterner. One guest argues that a charity reporting no concerns is not living its safeguarding, because "it's what you see as opposed to what you read."

Nonprofit News Feed Podcast and Using the Whole Whale share hosts named George and Nick, and both give AI plenty of airtime. 🚨 Our Shocking Discovery: Everything Nonprofits Need To Know About AI & Server Costs (news) covers UN researchers' experimental AI avatars of a Sudanese refugee. One host is uneasy about even low rates of hallucination around people in crisis. On Using the Whole Whale, Avinash Kaushik forecasts organic search traffic falling 16 to 64 percent. Treat that as his projection, since he also says the field is too early for standards. The latest listed episodes of both shows date from 2025, so hear them as recent history.

Making the case to decision-makers

Nonprofit Power Podcast, hosted by Kath Patrick, coaches progressive nonprofit leaders on influencing money and policy decision-makers. In How to Get Decisionmakers to See Your Services as the Best Possible Bargain, she warns against getting defensive when asked to cut a price. She then walks through how a $25 price anchor gives way to $300 and $600 options. She also describes a client who phoned taxi companies to price medical transport before putting numbers into a pitch. How Your Modesty May Be Costing You Serious Money is blunt about credentials: "They care about, do you know what you're talking about and can you help them?"

Where to start

  • New to fundraising: First Day Podcast, How Great Fundraisers Ask Donors for Transformational Gifts, a steady lesson in reading when a donor is ready.
  • Leading a board or a team: The Discovery Pod, Transforming Healthcare Philanthropy With Mary McPherson, CEO, Oakville Hospital Foundation, for how a foundation agrees on priorities with its hospital partner.
  • Writing appeals: Nonprofit Lowdown, #380- No More Poverty Porn in Fundraising with Maria Rio, the most useful conversation here about consent.
  • Keeping up with the sector: Third Sector Podcast, Small charity infrastructure, donation decline and an AI fundraising experiment, with an inflatable dog suit for light relief.
  • Before a funder meeting: Nonprofit Power Podcast, How to Get Decisionmakers to See Your Services as the Best Possible Bargain.

Whichever you choose, carry the question the donor-advised fund debate keeps raising: who decides where the money goes, and when?
