Some great National Guard podcasts to get to know
Coverage splits between two very different entry points: a local conversation about Memphis and a military-family story. Those are the only episodes that name the National Guard outright, so this is a thin listening shelf rather than a deep, continuing beat. Most other appearances are brief references inside broader political or historical episodes.
The direct coverage
The clearest current-affairs choice is The SoBros Power Hour: Nashville. Ep. 143: The National Guard in Memphis gives the subject a specific local frame; that makes it the obvious starting point to hear how the Guard enters a city-level conversation. The show sits in comedy talk, so expect a looser route through the issue than a formal news briefing.
Grace of a Military Child and Life approaches from the household side. Season 3 Episode 19 - Michelle Elliot - Army National Guard Spouse puts a spouse at the center of the episode. It is the more personal on-ramp and the only title here focused on life alongside Guard service rather than a public controversy.
When the Guard is part of a larger story
Behind the Headlines Podcast is built for measured, locally specific public-affairs discussion, but its National Guard mentions sit inside episodes billed around other Memphis political subjects: 1619: Public holds GOP responsible for ongoing government shutdown, Cohen says, 1620: State Rep. Pearson said he can work across the aisle without moderating his political views, and 1638: Downtown Memphis Commission President & CEO Chandell Ryan. These are useful for listeners already following Memphis civic affairs, not for anyone seeking a standalone Guard explainer.
The historical appearances are similarly contextual. 1934: Mill City Revolt includes the Guard within a run of episodes titled A Moment of Dual Power, Massacre in Minneapolis: Bloody Friday, "Don't Fail Me Now, Boys!", and Olson's Raid. The sequence offers the strongest historical trail, though none of those episodes advertises the Guard as its principal subject.
Other history shows place the reference even farther in the background. Kerner Commission Report on Racial Division reaches it through institutional material such as 062 - Supplement on Control of Disorder State Response and 065 - Supplement on Control of Disorder Coordinating the Control Response part 2. AZ: The History of Arizona podcast mentions it within Episode 233: The Machita Incident, delivered in that show’s detail-heavy, conversational lecture style.
Political Gabfest, meanwhile, is a poor first stop if the Guard is your sole interest. Its mentions occur amid the broader political roundtables Trump Literally Knocks Down the White House and Live from Chicago!; the attraction there is argument among informed hosts, with the Guard entering as one element of a larger news discussion.
Where to start
Start with The SoBros Power Hour: Nashville’s Ep. 143: The National Guard in Memphis for the most direct public-affairs entry. Choose Grace of a Military Child and Life’s Season 3 Episode 19 - Michelle Elliot - Army National Guard Spouse for the personal angle. For historical context, continue with 1934: Mill City Revolt’s A Moment of Dual Power or AZ: The History of Arizona podcast’s Episode 233: The Machita Incident, understanding that the Guard is secondary in both.
