How Martin Luther podcasts differ, and which to try

Martin Luther receives little coverage, and mostly through indirect discussion. The useful listening paths approach him through Reformation disputes, theological texts, and later confessional teaching. Several shows mention him only while pursuing a broader subject, so this is a page for following trails rather than finding a definitive interview-style series.

The clearest historical trail

HIStory Through The Eyes Of Faith offers the most approachable sequence. Ep. 139 | Luther and the Indulgence Sellers is the obvious entry, followed by a wider Reformation arc through Ep. 140 | Here I Stand, Ep. 143 | Reformation Radicals?, and Ep. 151 | The Counter-Reformation Strikes Back!

For denser, chapter-by-chapter listening, History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century, Volume 1 by Jean-Henri Merle d'Aubigné (1794 - 1872) supplies more granular signposts. Book 2: Chapter 8: 'Popular Declamations'—Moral Purity of Luther—Mysticism—Spenlein—Justification by Faith—Necessity of Works gathers several doctrinal questions into one reading, while Book 3: Chapter 9: Prierio—His Dialogue—Luther's Reply—Hochstraten—Eck—'The Obelisks'—'The Asterisks' shifts toward argument and reply.

Modern Church History - Msgr. Witt is better for surrounding context than direct treatment. Episode 12: Indulgencies, Justification and Denominationalism (March 21, 2019) leads into episodes on The Schmalkaltic War and The Council of Trent.

From history into theology

Commentary on Genesis - Luther on Sin and the Flood takes the slowest route: formal, theological readings arranged as numbered chapters, including 023 - Chapter VI Part VII and 034 - Chapter IX Part V. Expect close exposition rather than biographical storytelling.

Later doctrinal discussion appears elsewhere in fragments. Concord Matters from KFUO Radio works through Review of the Large Catechism: History and Impact and The Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 2. Being Lutheran Podcast brings a more conversational panel style to #420 – Formula, Art 10 – Part 2.

Where to start

Begin with HIStory Through The Eyes Of Faith and Ep. 139 | Luther and the Indulgence Sellers for the quickest historical entry. Choose the Merle d’Aubigné reading for greater detail, or Modern Church History - Msgr. Witt when the wider Reformation setting matters more. For doctrinal listening, try Concord Matters from KFUO Radio.
