Getting into Isaac Newton podcasts

Start with the lectures. Isaac Newton receives little podcast coverage, and much of it places him inside wider conversations about physics, astronomy, or scientific thought. One show provides the clear main event; elsewhere, he is usually a brief point of reference.

The most complete route

Pioneers of Science by Oliver Lodge (1851 - 1940) offers the strongest sequence. Its dedicated Lecture VII: Sir Isaac Newton is the obvious first choice, followed by Lecture VIII: Newton and the Law of Gravitation. Together, those titles promise something rare here: an episode centred on Newton himself and an immediate continuation into a specific idea associated with his name.

The surrounding lectures also give the series room to build context. Lecture III: Kepler and the Laws of Planetary Motion and Lecture IV: Galileo and the Invention of the Telescope come before the Newton material, while Lecture XV: The Discovery of Neptune and Lecture XVII: The Tides extend the listening path beyond it. If you want Newton situated within a longer run of scientific questions, this is the show to choose.

The intriguing second door

Initial Conditions: A Physics History Podcast takes a more teasing approach with The Newton You Didn't Know. The title advertises a corrective or unfamiliar portrait rather than a standard survey, making it the best alternative for listeners who already know the classroom version and want a different angle.

That episode stands alone in the show’s Newton coverage, however. Treat it as a promising focused stop, not the beginning of a substantial series.

Nearby physics, rather than Newton episodes

Several science podcasts enter territory where Newton may arise without making him their stated subject. The Origins Podcast with Lawrence Krauss ranges across Physics for Everyone, Lecture 3: Motion, from Galileo to Dark Mysteries, while The Quanta Podcast asks Is Gravity Just Rising Entropy? and explores The Fundamental Tension at the Heart of Math. These could work as follow-on listening about motion, gravity, or mathematics, but their titles do not promise sustained treatment of Newton.

The Titanium Physicists Podcast calls for the same caution. Among the episodes pointing firmly toward other subjects are Episode 83: Feeling Feeble WIMPS and Axions and Episode 81: LISA the Giant Tumbling Space Triangle. Newton may appear in the conversation, but these are poor places to begin if he is the reason you pressed play.

Where the coverage runs out

Beyond those few routes, the mentions become incidental. Science Talk centres episodes on This Simple Strategy Might Be the Key to Advancing Science Faster and Uncertainty is Science's Super Power. Make It Yours, Too. The HPS Podcast - Conversations from History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science offers S4 Ep 2 - Simon Schaffer on 'Leviathan and the Air-Pump: 40 years later' (Part 1) and its second part. Both shows may provide useful conversations about science, but neither currently offers a clearly labelled Newton starting point.

Where to start

  • Begin with Lecture VII: Sir Isaac Newton from Pioneers of Science by Oliver Lodge (1851 - 1940).
  • Continue directly to Lecture VIII: Newton and the Law of Gravitation.
  • For a more revisionist-sounding entry, try The Newton You Didn't Know from Initial Conditions: A Physics History Podcast.
  • If you want a modern question about gravity afterward, choose Is Gravity Just Rising Entropy? from The Quanta Podcast.
