What AFL podcasts actually cover
Open almost any AFL podcast after a busy weekend and the games are already becoming arguments. A missed shot turns into a verdict on a club; a rule becomes a referendum on the competition; one selection call expands into a theory about an entire season. The best shows assume you know the basic rhythms and get straight to the disputed part.
There is plenty of conventional match analysis, but the listening experience stretches much wider: fixtures, tribunals, drafts, media culture, fantasy trades, supporter anxiety, AFLW and the occasional gloriously unserious detour. Choosing a show mostly comes down to how much heat, structure and club loyalty you want in the room.
The daily argument machine
FOX FOOTY Podcasts is the broadest starting point. Its rotating voices work quickly from a headline toward consequences, whether the question is rules in AFL 360 - How will May be remembered? Plus rule changes to shake up season 2026! | 02/03/2026, the Brownlow system in AFL 360 – 'We have to progress': Dillon admits there could be changes to Brownlow system – 23/09/25, or the durability of contenders in Fox Footy Podcast: AFL's new big four make the prelims... again. The mood can rise to television-sized drama, especially around finals, but the discussion stays practical and argument-led.
The ESPN Footy Podcast is cooler and more stat-minded. It tends to begin with an observed problem and test how far the conclusion can travel. AFL: Worst yet to come for 'diabolical' Dons; the fixture is a mess gives you the blunt verdict and the structural complaint in one title; Red Time: AFL's most 'pointless' rule; Pendles call 'dangerous' for the sport promises a similar mix of provocation and qualification. For a more methodical special, MASSIVE AFL Draft preview: Club-by-club guides, prospects analysed shifts the emphasis toward prospects and club-by-club needs.
Round by round, with the edges left on
A Yank on the Footy has the looseness of a long conversation that keeps finding side roads. Its previews make room for guests and supporter-level curiosity: 433 - AFL North Melbourne Kangaroos 2026 Preview w/ Dean Vasic of Hashtag Kangaroos goes club-specific, while 454 - AFL Round 5 Tips w/ Myk Aussie of mykaussie.tv works as a weekly companion. 448 - 2026 AFL Ladder Predictions is the obvious choice if you enjoy forecasts that can be revisited as the season changes shape.
Between the sticks brings more collision. One voice will throw out the sharp verdict, another will rebut or add context, and the episode gathers detail through the friction. AFL Round 1 Fallout: Cripps Dominates | Pies & Bombers Exposed + Umpiring Chaos With New Rules is built for listeners who want immediate reaction, while AFL RD 4 Easter Weekend: Hawks vs Cats Thriller | Demon Revival + A few Vic Big 4 in Trouble? 😬 S2E5 shows how quickly the show can move between a single game and a wider reading of several clubs.
Blue Abroad narrows that emotional energy to a supporter perspective. The discussion is fast, participatory and comfortable letting live reaction lead into analysis. The Blue Abroad Show | Voss the Boss 🔵 | AFL Round 9, 2025 is the club-centred option; Blue Abroad Show | It's Time for AFL Opening Round 🔥 catches the anticipatory end of the same relationship. Come here when you want investment and supporter mood left intact.
Footy culture after the tactics stop
Zero Hanger AFL Podcast knows that AFL conversation does not end with structures and scorelines. It can turn irritation, broadcast habits and crowd culture into the main event. THE HITOUT: Crazy AFL milestones + WORST footy cliches is a good example of the show’s dry, busy style, and THE HITOUT: Picking AFL goal songs + more AFL commentator rankings pushes even further into the rituals surrounding the game. There is serious football knowledge underneath it, but the pleasure comes from the rhetorical questions, side jokes and quick pivots.
Legiterally. offers the most conspicuous change of register. AFL Grand Final (LGBT Variant) signals an episode driven by animated culture-riffing and social observation rather than orderly match review. The conversation is fast, profane and associative, with jokes accumulating through shared references. It is a useful palate cleanser if the standard panel debate has begun to feel airless.
When every result becomes a decision
Fantasy coverage converts the weekly competition into a rolling sequence of trades, prices and regrets. SportsbyFry supplies straightforward planning episodes such as Round 15 AFL Fantasy Preview (Ep. 348) and Round 18 AFL Fantasy Preview (Ep. 353). Its 2025 Over/Under wins for every AFL club ft. J-Lo (Ep. 396) also offers a club-wide forecasting exercise beyond the usual fantasy preview.
SuperCoach AFL: The Official Podcast is busier and more panel-driven. Banter quickly gives way to selection consequences, with roles, risk and value constantly being recalculated. AFL trade period review: SuperCoach 2026 locks, bargains, and traps! | The Phantom’s Lair is the clearest entry point for hearing real-world movement translated into fantasy categories.
AFL Fantasy with The Traders has a similarly rapid group-chat rhythm, though recurring segments and in-jokes give it a distinct shape. R2 teams, captains, trade tips - AFL Fantasy LIVE is almost a checklist of what the show does best: react to team news, argue about captaincy and leave the listener with an actionable trade decision.
AFLW entry points
AFL News provides concentrated AFLW listening through AFLW Trail Blazers: Let the games begin and AFLW Trail Blazers: GWS rising star Rebecca Beeson joins the team. These are older episodes, published in early 2018, so they work better as specific snapshots than as current-season guidance.
How Good's Footy? supplies a more recent grand-final destination in 2025 AFLW Grand Final (Season Finale). Its broader round-by-round side is represented by 2023 AFL Round 21 (Ft. Tracey), making it a compact option for listeners who want both competitions within the same feed.
Where to start
For the widest overview, begin with FOX FOOTY Podcasts and AFL 360 - GRAND FINAL WEEK IS HERE! Will Lachie Neale return for the Lions? + Gaz passionately defends concussion protocols - 22/09/25. Choose The ESPN Footy Podcast’s Red Time: Why Anzac guernseys matter; AFL finals shake up? when you want a measured discussion that connects football culture with competition structure. For louder post-round reaction, try Between the sticks and AFL RD19: Bombers FLY UP🚀 | KenOATH🤝🏽Tassie | Crows Are Flying | Are The Pies Back? |. If your weekend ultimately ends at the trade screen, start with AFL Fantasy with The Traders and R2 teams, captains, trade tips - AFL Fantasy LIVE.
