About WARDROBE CRISIS with Clare Press
WARDROBE CRISIS with Clare Press approaches fashion as a verb, not a decorative category. It asks what clothing does in the world. Recent episodes range across sustainability, craft, history, ecology, politics, and the moral imagination of design. The show can spend time with a stitch, then pull back to the economic system around it. Embroidery becomes a route into power, devotion, sacred objects, couture labour, unconventional materials, and Palestinian cultural continuity. Secondhand clothing becomes a window into pawn shops, travelling dealers, family cycles, scarcity, and the lost value of ordinary belongings. Forests matter here too. A Tasmania episode turns the Tarkine rainforest into a question about grief, activism, war, and whether environmental care can stay visible during human catastrophe. The show’s guests often bring deep research or practice-based knowledge. Robin Annear discusses the history of secondhand everything. Amanda Cobbett explains embroidered moss sculptures and the technical work of making three-dimensional forms from machine stitching. Wafa Ghnaim brings Palestinian, Syrian, and Lebanese dress history into questions of museums, colonial lenses, photography, appropriation, war, and displacement. Indy Johar stretches the conversation toward planetary civics, entangled economies, and fashion’s role beyond seasonal consumption. Helena Norberg Hodge frames globalisation through corporate power, regulation, and local resilience. The result is thoughtful, urgent, and sometimes bracing. It has a fondness for beauty, but not escapism. It is comfortable with wonder and anger in the same episode. The show suits listeners who want fashion connected to land, labour, culture, memory, and structural change. Its strongest episodes make garments feel like evidence: of power, care, extraction, survival, and imagination.
Made for: For listeners interested in ethical fashion, textile history, craft, sustainability, museums, activism, and the politics behind what people wear. It especially suits people who prefer fashion coverage with research, feeling, and systems-level thinking.
What sets it apart: The show connects garment culture to forests, colonial narratives, secondhand economies, globalisation, and planetary design without losing sight of craft. Its fashion lens is unusually expansive: stitches, supply chains, museums, landscapes, and political power all belong in the frame.
