Wait Five Minutes

Wait Five Minutes is a show about Florida, but not the flattened version of Florida that usually travels well. It prefers the layered state. Its stories begin with visible things: a fort wall, a downtown tower, a state park, a painting studio, a framed comic in a legislative office, a battlefield tree that somehow still carries Florida with it. From there, the show works outward. The format is essayistic and measured, with long contextual runways before a guest or interview segment takes over. That patience matters. A story about Camp Blanding is not only a military history; it becomes a confrontation with imprisonment, Japanese-American internment, Native captivity, and the machinery of wartime fear. A story about Miami’s Freedom Tower is not only about a building; it becomes a passage through newspapers, Cuban independence, exile, and Florida’s long entanglement with the island just south of it. A bear hunt episode turns wildlife policy into a dispute over habitat, development, and whether management has to become lethal. The show can also loosen its collar. October episodes on weird cinema, body modification, organ replacement, and frank nonfiction let the same curiosity move toward the strange, gross, funny, and macabre. Even then, the storytelling keeps its spine. Wait Five Minutes is strongest when it lets a place carry the argument: roads and the Florida Highwaymen, stone and old carvings, Gettysburg oaks and hickories, office walls and public duty. It is not banter-first regional pride. It is regional attention sharpened into history, with warmth at the edges and consequence at the center.
