About The Traveling Introvert

Most career advice assumes visibility is the goal. The Traveling Introvert starts somewhere else. Janice, who signs off as the career introvert helping listeners build their brand and get hired, records short episodes about working, coping, and advancing without having to perform extroversion. The register is conversational and slightly wandering, closer to a colleague thinking out loud than a polished lecture. One episode takes on burnout and treats it as a process rather than a switch that flips. Janice moves through twelve stages, describing isolation that goes emotional as well as physical, odd behaviour changes and irritability, a detached out-of-body feeling, an inner emptiness no to-do list can fix, and at the far end a collapse that is both mental and physical. Her central point is that introverts mask it well, because withdrawal looks like normal behaviour from them and only sets off alarms when an extrovert does it. The advice is not dramatic. Catch it early, make small shifts, stop pretending Mondays are fine. Performance reviews get similar treatment. Rather than an ordeal, Janice frames them as one of the few moments where preparation beats visibility, and she pushes for a weekly habit of logging finished work in a journal, spreadsheet, or a happy folder, whether or not review season is anywhere close. Procrastination and overwhelm get their own episode, aimed squarely at people working remotely or running their own thing without external structure. Her answer is virtual co-working, which she ran herself in 2021 using something close to the Pomodoro method, and which she describes as an appointment you feel unable to miss. Public speaking is broken into parts a nervous presenter can actually use: know the audience, set tone early with a question or a story, then structure the body so it holds. Career Conversations episodes change the shape of the show. Guests are asked the same opening question about what introversion means to them, then talk about their working lives. Reesa Woolf PhD calls it her secret life of introversion, describes a first week on the job that made her want to run, and explains how she started asking people with interesting jobs if she could visit them, purely out of curiosity, which broadened everything that followed. Esther Avant, a self-described practical person who likes data and order, explains how she once dismissed mindset work as fluffy before realising that most of it is noticing your own thoughts and asking whether they help or hinder. A thought is not a fact, as the conversation puts it. The episodes are bite-sized and the advice is small-scale by design. Nothing here asks a listener to become someone else.

Made for: Introverts navigating offices, reviews, and self-employment who want workplace tactics that do not require performing extroversion. Also suits remote workers and solo business owners looking for structure, plus anyone curious about how quieter colleagues experience visibility, burnout, and review season.

What sets it apart: Rather than coaching introverts to act more outgoing, it builds strategy around traits like preparation and self-containment, treating them as the advantage. The Career Conversations strand adds first-hand accounts from guests, so the advice sits alongside real working lives rather than theory.

In their own words

A bite-sized podcast about traveling while running a business and being an introvert. Not knowing what introversion was until my 30s, I feel that I wasted some of my early years by not really understanding myself. An inspiration for my business is that I want to help others understand themselves better, earlier on in their careers and their lives. Introversion is a very misunderstood area – introverts can suffer mentally and physically because people typecast them or act negatively towards them. It’s not nice to be trapped in a little box. When you label somebody, they tend to act like that label, which stops people from achieving their true potential. I don’t let being an introvert define me…

    Career Conversations with Esther Avant

    Hidden gem

Esther Avant, guest on The Traveling Introvert’s “Career Conversations,” describes introversion as needing alone time to “regroup and generate energy.” She says her coaching centers on women with careers and families, combining exercise, nutrition, and “a different mentality” built on “love and acceptance and compassion.” She argues that health coaches are not automatically disciplined or effortless, citing her own years of “binge and restrict,” “intermittent fasting,” and going “paleo.” She also explains why she now uses mindset tools, saying “a thought is not a fact” and that journaling helps her decide what to keep or replace.
