About The Tiny Bookcase
The Tiny Bookcase is a short-fiction show where the pleasure comes from hearing stories leave the desk and meet other writers in the room. Nico and Ben introduce each episode with an easy, lightly chaotic warmth. The structure is simple. A prompt produces new writing, the pieces are read aloud, and the conversation circles back through technique, taste, and what worked on the page. It is not only an interview show. It is a miniature workshop with performance built in. Recent episodes show a particular interest in compression: exact word counts, cuts that hurt, and the usefulness of learning how to reduce a piece without losing its pulse. Juliet E. McKenna’s interview turns publishing history into something practical, moving from entrance exams to revision, pseudonyms, author photographs, and reader assumptions about gender. The show is comfortable with the business machinery around books, but it usually brings that machinery back to craft. Benjamin Kurt Unsworth’s episode shows its darker edge. His story reading builds a stagnant, disturbing family scene, and the response is immediate, admiring, and unsettled. That balance matters. The show lets horror feel horrifying, then asks why the language landed. Luke Jennings’ showcase opens through dance criticism, ballet, journalism, fiction, and the Killing Eve novels, giving the format room to follow a writer across several creative lives. Athena Stevens’ episode brings theatre, Salem, political bleakness, historic texture, and revision notes into the same conversation. The hosts are generous but not vague. They ask what can be cut, what a scene needs, and where humour slips into darkness. A recurring closing ritual adds a knowingly absurd flourish around patron thanks. The result is literary without being solemn. It is best for listeners who enjoy short stories as live objects: written under constraints, read with feeling, then handled by people who care about the machinery inside them.
Made for: The show suits short-story readers, genre fans, working writers, and literature listeners who enjoy hearing drafts, readings, interviews, and craft notes in one place. It is especially strong for audiences who like humour beside darker material.
What sets it apart: The Tiny Bookcase sets itself apart by making new prompt-based fiction the centre of the episode, not just a topic of conversation. Guests bring literary credentials, but the format keeps returning to concrete choices on the page.
In their own words
The Tiny Bookcase is a short story writing and interview podcast. In each episode, our hosts (Nico & Ben) and the guest write a story using a shared prompt then read it for their own entertainment, and hopefully yours!
