About The Poet and The Poem
The Poet and The Poem is a literary interview series where poems are not treated as decoration before the conversation. They are the center of the room. Grace Cavalieri begins with a reading, then follows the poem’s language into craft, memory, place, and the poet’s larger body of work. The pace is measured and attentive. Recent episodes show a wide range of voices, from debut poets to nationally recognized figures. Diane Wilbin Parks and Sista Joy Alford bring poems about inner conflict, social urgency, purpose, and the work required to make change. Khadija Sisay moves between Manhattan, London, African diaspora research, pan-Africanism, divorce, and the music that carries both intimacy and rupture. Harryette Mullen’s appearance foregrounds dream worlds, Morpheus, signs, and the charged theatricality of a new book. Ellen Carter Woodbridge’s poems turn on mystery, shame, consciousness, and the unstable stories people tell about harm and memory. Eric Baker reads from a larger project full of sea light, gulls, waves, docks, and repeated motion. Gail Bartlett and Jan Booth bring first books shaped by farms, creeks, bridges, birds, pollution, grief, and tight poetic forms. Beth Doolin and Jenny Keith appear as distinct voices with sophisticated craft, moving through loss, survival, Washington, family history, and civic unease. Arthur Sze’s episode connects swimming, astronomy, spices, bomb warnings, birds, trees, field guides, and the philosophical looseness of ownership. The show’s editorial strength is its confidence in the poem itself. Readings are given enough time to establish rhythm before the questions arrive. Cavalieri’s comments often catch on one image, one formal choice, or one phrase, then ask the poet to stay with it. That makes the program useful for readers, writers, teachers, and listeners who enjoy hearing how a poem thinks in sound. It is serious without becoming sealed off. The conversations preserve the human warmth around difficult subjects while keeping the poem’s craft in view.
Made for: For poetry readers, writers, teachers, and literary listeners who want poems in the poet’s own voice, followed by close, generous conversation. It also suits anyone drawn to craft, memory, public language, and the emotional intelligence of short forms.
What sets it apart: The series gives substantial space to the poems themselves before analysis begins. Its Library of Congress setting and Grace Cavalieri’s precise, attentive questioning create a rare mix of archive, performance, and craft conversation.

Grace Cavalieri pairs full-bodied poetry readings with attentive questions about language, memory and the working lives behind the poems.
The Poet and The Poem puts the poem first, then lets Grace Cavalieri question its maker about the choices and life behind it. Readings are substantial enough to establish a voice before conversation begins, and the range runs from Edgar Kunz's account of a teacher changing his…
