THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas

THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas is a fight show run by a father and son. Teddy Atlas III welcomes listeners, sets up the cards and lays out the betting lines, and his father, boxing hall of famer Teddy Atlas, answers with the analysis. Recent titles move easily between boxing and the UFC: Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder vs Derek Chisora, Itauma vs Franklin Jr, Carlos Adames vs. Ammo Williams, UFC 326 and UFC 327 all appear. The pattern is setup, then breakdown. Teddy Atlas takes a plain question and keeps adding layers until it becomes a full account of why a fight went the way it did, told in long, circling sentences about legs, gaps, clinches, chins and corners. His reading of Conor Benn against Prograis is one example. He suspects Benn watched Prograis's earlier fight, saw legs that looked shot, and went looking for one big punch, which meant five rounds passed before the body work came. He wonders aloud whether the corner finally talked him out of it. Elsewhere he compares an awkward, unpredictable fighter to Roy Jones and explains why a fundamentally sound, by-the-book opponent kept arriving a step late. He has a good eye for an image, too, and jokes that one pair of fighters threw as if they were 'allergic to straight punches.' Betting runs all the way through the tactics. Round totals, props and the hunt for value come up repeatedly, and Teddy Atlas III takes care to spell out the exact line. When a pick misses, as his Holloway call did, Teddy Atlas says so and points to the over he made his main play. When a call lands, as his pick in Opetaia vs Glanton did, he admits it makes him feel a little better, and he still credits the heavy underdog's grit. The live streams are the other half of the operation. There Teddy Atlas calls UK and Irish cards while fans ask questions in real time, which he describes as a return to the commentary seat he held for years at ESPN. The podcast picks up threads from those nights, including the atmosphere of a crowd in Ireland. Old stories come up when they help the argument, such as his account of Olympic judging he calls crooked, a view he says he held on the record before he went in. The warmth is easy to hear: grandsons dropping into a stream, a sister's birthday, March Madness brackets and late-night coffee. The tone can turn grave as well, as in one closing plea to anyone struggling to hold on long enough for a brighter day. Some sign-offs have been plain ring advice: shorten the punches, keep the chin down, move the head after the last punch.
