The Doofcast

The Doofcast is a Doof Media conversation show where film criticism, pop-culture ranking, and community ritual all sit at the same table. Scott Daly and Matt Freeman are the recurring named voices in its episodes, trading bits, corrections, and reactions before moving into the main subject. The show has the feel of two people who have talked about stories together for a long time. It can be messy in the moment, but the format underneath is clear. Recent episodes center on a patron-voted Best 25 films of the 21st century project, with Hereditary, Midsommar, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse all appearing in the run. Horror gets serious attention. Ari Aster’s films are treated as objects worth parsing, not just as shock machines. The show also follows directors across bodies of work, including a Deconstructing Paul Thomas Anderson series with Magnolia and There Will Be Blood. Those conversations make room for reputation, memory, first-time viewings, old favorites, and the strange details that attach themselves to a movie over years. Awards season gives the show another rhythm. The 2026 Oscars episodes cover Best Picture nominees, personal ballots, prediction games, and the gap between Academy recognition and the larger field of worthwhile films. The tone is playful without being weightless. A joke about a superhero movie can sit beside a real discussion of why a film matters, and the show rarely acts as if those modes are enemies. The book club episodes widen the scope. Listener and patron participation is not decorative; the episodes show votes shaping both monthly reading choices and film rankings. That community machinery gives the show a serial quality, with lists moving, projects resuming, and unfinished runs getting picked back up. The Doofcast works best for people who enjoy criticism as a shared habit. It is for listeners who want analysis, but also want the false starts, friendly needling, and side doors that come with an unscripted conversation. The result is an approachable, nerdy, frequently funny archive of contemporary story culture.
