About Sustainability In Your Ear
Sustainability In Your Ear is a patient, interview-driven sustainability show hosted by Mitch Ratcliffe. Its center of gravity is the gap between good environmental intent and systems that actually change outcomes. A conversation about green shopping does not stop at reusable bottles or bamboo toothbrushes. It turns toward education, behavior, political engagement, and the way consumer responsibility can hide larger questions of power. An episode on e-commerce returns begins with the ordinary disappointment of a product looking different at home than it did online. From there, the show follows color perception, metamerism, retailer responsibility, landfill waste, and better product data. Business conversations are handled with the same practical curiosity. Steve Wilhite is brought into a discussion of electrification, renewable energy commitments, corporate execution, and the hard work behind climate pledges. Jasper Steinhausen appears in a conversation about making sustainability profitable, where waste, excess heat, raw materials, resilience, and growth sit in the same frame. The show also treats circularity as a materials question. Forest fiber, digital product passports, origin data, and incentives for forest owners all become part of one larger problem: how reused materials carry trust through another life cycle. Waste is not simply condemned. It is examined as feedstock for new products and packaging, with attention to supply security and competition for useful streams. Food and agriculture appear through cattle methane and the attempt to connect policy, entrepreneurship, and implementation. Wildfire technology brings a graver edge, asking how detection and response might change when minutes matter. Across these subjects, the show stays accessible without sanding off the technical parts. It prefers careful setup, pointed questions, and practical consequences over slogans. Sustainability In Your Ear is strongest when it makes an abstract climate idea feel like a real-world operating problem.
Made for: Suits a listener who wants sustainability coverage that connects consumer choices, corporate execution, materials, policy, and infrastructure. It fits people who prefer careful explanation over cheerleading.
What sets it apart: The show stands out by translating climate and circular-economy ideas into practical system questions: who pays, what data is needed, where waste appears, and what has to change for a solution to scale.
In their own words
Mitch Ratcliffe interviews activists, authors, entrepreneurs and changemakers working to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, post-carbon society. You have more power to improve the world than you know! Listen in to learn and be inspired to give your best to restoring the climate and regenerating nature.

Author Michael Maniates on Why Green Shopping Isn't Enough
Hidden gemEnvironmental social scientist Michael Maniates, author of 'The Living Green Myth' (Polity Press, November 2025), argues with host Mitch Ratcliffe that lifestyle environmentalism — green shopping, reusable bottles, eco-labels — cannot drive the systemic change sustainability requires because 'the changes we really need just aren't for sale.' He points to the Jevons paradox, whereby increased resource efficiency historically produces more consumption, not less.
