Two fans, one sport, and a bingo card every basho.
The gist
Sumo Kaboom is a weekly conversation between Leslie and Laurie about professional sumo, built around recaps of each tournament in multi-day stretches and profiles of wrestlers climbing the ranks. Other weeks go to the sport's odd corners, from what a retiring rikishi does next to which JSA staff actually move the equipment.

About Sumo Kaboom
Sumo Kaboom is a weekly podcast about professional sumo, hosted by Leslie and Laurie. Every episode opens with the same two-part greeting, 'Konnichiwa! Howdy, y'all!', and that pairing of Japanese formality and folksy welcome is a fair guide to what follows. The show's rhythm is set by the tournament calendar. Ahead of a basho comes a preview, such as '293: March Sumo Preview', which introduced two newcomers to the top division. Once the tournament is underway the recaps arrive in stretches: '294: Days 1 and 2 of the March Tournament', then '295: March Basho Days 3 -9', then '296: Days 10 - 15 of the March Basho'. The hosts record after watching and edit afterwards, and they are open about running a little behind the live action. Between the recaps sits a second kind of episode that has little to do with the standings. '298: Sewanin and Wakaimonogashira Do What?' began with curiosity about what Chiyomaru would do after retiring and became a look at two staff roles inside the JSA, from ticket-booth duty to moving and storing equipment, with the pair splitting the research between them. Wrestler profiles form a longer thread. The hosts introduce rikishi when they first appear in the top division and, when those same men later reach sanyaku, come back to fill in what has been learned since. '297: Atamifuji and Kirishima Revisted' is that second pass, and it leads with a news flash on Inho's comeback to juryo. The bingo game is the show's community engine. It runs every tournament, it is free, and the cards are built from wrestler names, which the hosts pitch as a great way for a newcomer to learn who is who in the top division. The March edition drew hundreds of entries. Prizes are homespun and specific: jam made by Leslie, official JSA merch from Big Sumo Fan, a Cheeky Sumo t-shirt for the most creatively decorated card, and bags from the publisher of the sumo primer 'Way of Salt'. Winners' notes get read on air, and one about watching sumo with a grandfather whose favorite was Takayasu drew an openly moved response. None of this is delivered with expert authority, and the show does not pretend otherwise. When the sewanin episode reaches the question of who fetches the salt bucket, the answer is flagged as a guess, and a recap can wander into whether a wrestler has really started a YouTube channel before finding its way back. The hosts say plainly that they are here for the humor, the athleticism, and the joy of sumo, and that they want to bring beginners into the sport. A newcomer could start with any preview episode and a bingo card. A longer-standing fan will get more from the revisit episodes, where the show's own memory of a wrestler's rise becomes the material.
Made for: Suits a listener who is new to sumo and wants a friendly way in, with tournament recaps that explain who is who and a bingo card built for learning names. It also fits a follower who wants day-by-day chat about a basho rather than hard technical analysis.
What sets it apart: Where many sports podcasts trade on expertise, this one runs on fandom and says so: the hosts flag their guesses as guesses, and the running bingo game, with jam made by Leslie among the prizes, turns each tournament into something listeners play along with.
In their own words
Sumo Kaboom! A weekly podcast dedicated to our favorite sport - sumo wrestling. We chat about tournaments, current events, history and our favorite wrestlers. We are performers, improvisers, and creators and have absolutely no sumo training. But, we are huge sumo fans. Having lived in Japan, Leslie loves the history and traditions of sumo. She also has a deep love for sumo karaoke singers. Laurie is fascinated by sumo wrestler fandom, the sumo training regimen and physicality of the sport. Together, we serve up exciting sumo treats for sumo-curious fans. We share an enthusiasm for sumo and like all sisters...
