About Stagecraft with Gordon Cox
Stagecraft with Gordon Cox is built for listeners who follow theater as an art form, an industry, and a living workplace. Its center of gravity is Broadway, with regular attention to Off-Broadway, institutions, new musicals, revivals, and the people carrying productions through rehearsal, preview, opening, and long runs. Gordon Cox brings a measured editorial style to conversations with performers, directors, creators, and theater leaders. The tone is informed rather than fannish. It assumes the listener knows why Lincoln Center Theater, Wicked, Hamilton, or a new Broadway musical matters, then uses that shared context to ask about the choices underneath the headline. In one episode, Lear de Bessonet discusses beginning her first season as artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater, honoring the institution’s history while programming work meant to bring joy and provoke thought. Another episode follows Adam Lambert from musical theater work into American Idol, Queen, and a return to the stage. James Monroe Iglehart’s conversation about A Wonderful World turns the spotlight toward vocal technique, co-directing, and the long adjustment of a show through previews. The Hamilton anniversary episode lingers on endurance, audience energy, family sacrifice, and the emotional memory of a role that became larger than a job. Stagecraft also makes room for stranger theater-adjacent objects, including Emily McGill’s Hirschfeld Broadway Tarot and its mix of caricature, iconography, spirituality, and fandom. The show is not a recap machine. It is interested in how theater people think. Collaboration comes up often, as do institutional legacy, casting, musical-writing choices, performer identity, and the daily discipline behind a seemingly effortless performance. Even when the guest is famous, the conversation tends to pull toward craft. Even when the topic is glamorous, the questions point back to labor. After more than 250 episodes, the series also carries the feel of an archive: a record of Broadway artists explaining their work while the work is still fresh.
Made for: For theater fans, Broadway regulars, performers, creatives, and industry watchers who want polished interviews grounded in production realities. It suits listeners who care about process as much as opening-night glamour.
What sets it apart: Stagecraft stands out for its Variety access and its focus on how theater is made, not just who is starring in it. The conversations connect marquee performers with directors, institutions, writing rooms, revivals, and the working pressures behind major stage moments.
