About Spotlight with Laura Dawn
Spotlight is a conversation show built around one guest at a time. Its subjects come from the Pacific Northwest and from the wider world of people trying to fix something. One episode sits with Elisa Kerr of Beavers Northwest, who argues that beavers are not just a funky animal living in wetlands but an engineer of salmon habitat, water quality and climate resilience. She is candid about what she cannot yet prove; asked for a dollar figure on wetland services, she says the beaver-specific research is not there and offers to go find it. Another episode turns to Megan Carlyle, field director of Wild Grief, on what bereaved young people actually need. Her answer is not a breakthrough or an epiphany. It is other kids, running and climbing on logs, who have also lost someone. Author Sy Montgomery corrects the plural of octopus in the opening seconds, then describes aggregations that researchers have nicknamed Octopolis and Octatlantis, and octopuses long assumed to be solitary that turn out to keep neighbors. Janet Sherlund, who wrote about her own adoption in Abandoned at Birth, describes paying an agency to search, learning her birth mother lived two towns away, and being told the woman refused to meet her. She had assumed her fifties would insulate her from that. They did not. Other episodes stay closer to the kitchen table: cutting household food waste by planning a shopping trip and sizing a recipe honestly, or a school-supply drive that lets teachers from Title I schools shop a resource center and then pass materials on quietly, without singling any child out. The register is warm and unhurried, closer to a conversation than to debate. Questions are short. Guests are given room to finish a thought, including the messy parts. The interviewer discloses her own stakes, mentioning a recent loss in her family, and that her sister taught a Montgomery book to fourth graders, and the disclosure reads as an invitation rather than a detour. Laura Dawn hosts, and Lori Hardy opens and closes several episodes with a steady sign-off about talking to people who are making a difference. Some episodes carry sponsor reads before the conversation begins. What holds the range together is a preference for the person doing the work over the person commenting on it. Nobody is asked to defend a position. Everyone is asked how the thing actually functions. With 282 episodes behind it, the catalogue works as a directory of regional causes as much as a weekly listen.
Made for: Listeners who follow Pacific Northwest community life, environmental restoration and grassroots nonprofits, and who prefer a long, patient interview to a panel argument. It also suits readers drawn to natural-history and memoir authors talking through their books.
What sets it apart: It gives regional nonprofit directors the same unhurried attention it gives a visiting author, so beaver dams, youth grief work and octopus research sit in one catalogue. The interviewer names her own stakes in a subject rather than performing neutrality.

Spotlight with Laura Dawn builds its interviews around people who can make a large subject tangible. Laura Dawn and Lori Hardy ask about coexistence with beavers, preventing household food waste, an adoptee's search for biological family, octopus social behavior and outdoor…
