About Retropod
Retropod is a compact history series shaped like a stack of well-chosen archival clippings. Each episode begins with a specific incident, then widens just enough to show why it mattered. The show is brisk. It does not ask for a long runway before the story begins. A mysterious illness shadows James Buchanan’s inauguration season, and suspicion quickly turns toward the National Hotel. A wrong number reaches Colonel Harry Schaup’s red phone during the Cold War, setting up the origin story of the military’s Santa tracker. Apollo 8’s Earthrise photograph becomes more than a space image; it becomes a human, colorful answer to a year scarred by war, racial unrest, and assassinations. Robert Morris appears as both founding figure and political target, asking to be investigated after attacks in the press. Even a Capitol ghost story gets treated as a piece of Washington culture, complete with newspaper color and sly political humor. The show’s register is conversational, but its instincts are those of reported feature writing. It likes dates, places, institutional memory, and the odd sentence in an old paper that still crackles. Washington is a recurring stage, especially when politics, press accounts, public fear, and national myth overlap. The episodes are short enough for a quick listen, but they are not disposable. Their pleasure comes from compression: one historical object, one narrative turn, one larger resonance. Retropod is strongest when it finds a strange doorway into familiar American history and opens it without overexplaining the room beyond.
Made for: Retropod is for listeners who like concise, reported history stories with strong hooks and archival texture. It especially fits fans of American history, Washington lore, space history, political backstories, and odd origin stories.
What sets it apart: The show compresses feature-style reporting into short narrative episodes without losing scene, stakes, or historical context. Its best stories make a small detail carry a larger national mood.
In their own words
Retropod is a show for history-lovers, featuring stories about the past, rediscovered. Host Mike Rosenwald introduces you to history’s most colorful characters - forgotten heroes, overlooked villains, dreamers, explorers, world changers.
