Papal history, ranked with receipts.
The gist
Pontifacts follows the papacy one reign at a time, weighing each pope through biography, church politics, and historical fallout. The tone is rigorous but conversational, with room for messy elections, anti-popes, imperial pressure, and jokes about difficult names.

About PONTIFACTS: Ranking the Popes
Pontifacts is a long-running papal history series that treats every reign as both biography and judgment. The show moves pope by pope, but it is really tracking power. Recent episodes are deep in a medieval period where Rome, empire, aristocratic families, church reformers, and ambitious cardinals are all pulling at the papacy at once. Elections rarely feel simple. A candidate can be everyone else's compromise, the wrong faction's obstacle, or the man who spends months avoiding the office he has been chosen to hold. That gives the series a strong narrative engine. One pope inherits an investiture crisis. Another is forced out of Rome. Another becomes a hinge point for the Crusades. Another is remembered through a thicket of sources, charters, councils, and later arguments about authority. The show does not rush past that complexity. It lays out the factions, repeats the names when needed, and explains why a ring, a crozier, a banner, or a council can change the shape of European politics. The style is chatty without being careless. Fry and Bree react to the history as it gets strange, funny, grim, or bureaucratically exhausting. Their asides give the episodes lift, especially when the source record turns into a parade of Italian noble houses, anti-popes, anti-kings, and reluctant clerics. The research base is visible, with named sources, context from earlier episodes, and clear links between one pontificate and the next. Pontifacts works best for listeners who enjoy medieval history as a living argument rather than a list of dates. It is especially strong on the Gregorian reform period, papal authority, imperial conflict, and the practical instability of trying to govern the church from Rome. The ranking frame keeps the series playful. The historical stakes keep it from feeling like a gimmick. By the end of an episode, a pope has usually become more than a name and number: he is a case study in ambition, constraint, survival, or failure.
Made for: For listeners who enjoy medieval religious history, institutional power struggles, and research-heavy storytelling with a conversational edge. It especially suits people who like chronology, recurring judgments, and messy political context.
What sets it apart: Pontifacts combines one-pope-at-a-time structure with a running ranking system, so each biography lands as both story and verdict. Its strength is making dense papal politics understandable without losing the comedy of the source material.
In their own words
Welcome to Pontifacts; ranking all the Popes from Peter to Francis! In this light-hearted, only slightly blasphemous podcast, Bry and Fry go through the lives of the Pontiffs, and rate them based on our very valid and not subjective at all categories, to determine which Pope was the popiest Pope that ever Poped.
Why you'd press play
Papal elections become cliffhangers here, with enough banter to keep your mitre from slipping.
Press play if you want
- the cardinals' rise to feel like a genuine plot twist, not a footnote
- investiture disputes translated into stakes you can follow without surrendering your afternoon to a textbook
