Off the Path is a public-radio history show about where familiar things actually come from. The Theodore Roosevelt story keeps both scale and contradiction in view, tracing a child collector’s passion for nature alongside hunting, museums, politics, and image-making. Tuxedo Park becomes more than a rich enclave with a famous suit attached. It also carries etiquette, class performance, Emily’s childhood, and the rules that shaped high society. The Andre the Giant story connects street stickers, Providence art scenes, Buddy Cianci, public space, persuasion, and the road toward political imagery. Davis Donovan’s presence is conversational and observant, but the show is not casual about evidence. It favors walking through the place, hearing from people close to the record, and noticing the odd detail that changes the whole story. The tone can be warm, but it is rarely sentimental. Episodes are built for listeners who like historical surprise with real location, regional texture, and enough complexity to make a familiar name feel newly unstable.
