About Making The Impact - A Dance Competition Podcast
Making The Impact approaches competitive dance from the side of the stage most families rarely see clearly. Courtney Ortiz and Leslie lead conversations shaped by judging rooms, staff headsets, category rules, studio decisions, and the long training arc behind a routine. The show is practical first. It takes familiar competition-season questions and slows them down until the moving parts become easier to understand. An episode on the open category, for example, treats placement as an artistic and strategic decision rather than a place to put routines that do not fit elsewhere. Acro, jazz, contemporary, tricks, intention, and deductions all become part of the same conversation. The series also widens the frame. Conversations about inclusivity and diversity look at different abilities, backgrounds, races, ages, genders, and perspectives on what it means to belong in dance spaces. The show pays attention to signals that studios and families notice, from judging panels to social media and event presentation. It also gives room to the people who keep competitions moving. Emcees, backstage managers, tally staff, venues, and competition teams are treated as essential parts of the weekend, not background machinery. That backstage perspective gives the show its useful texture. College dance team episodes add another layer, covering recruitment, auditions, training expectations, precision, game-day obligations, and the jump from studio habits to collegiate systems. Mindset is a recurring concern. Personal goals, corrections, affirmations, accountability, and celebrating teammates are discussed as real competitive skills. The show does not reduce success to placement. It keeps returning to education, preparation, respect, and long-term growth. Prop work becomes a teaching tool. Venue etiquette becomes part of professionalism. Category choice becomes a statement of intent. For dancers, parents, teachers, and studio owners, Making The Impact offers a clear-eyed look at how competitions function and how better choices can make the stage experience stronger.
Made for: For competitive dancers, dance parents, studio teachers, studio owners, and judges who want practical context for competition season. It especially suits listeners making decisions about categories, auditions, training goals, event choice, and student development.
What sets it apart: The show connects judging insight with the full competition ecosystem: backstage staff, venues, college teams, representation, props, and studio strategy. Its value is the specificity of the examples, not general dance encouragement.
