LeinwandPerlenPodcast

LeinwandPerlenPodcast is a long-running German film podcast built on a simple habit: watch things, then argue about them. Matsch, Flori and Felix make up the regular group. Full attendance is not guaranteed. One of them is at the cinema, another is buried in work over Easter, a cold wave moves through the household — the opening minutes usually account for who is missing and why. That accounting is not filler. It sets the tone of a show recorded between other obligations rather than around a production schedule. The organizing device is the homework film. Someone assigns a title, the others watch it before the next recording, and the discussion that follows moves from summary to judgment without a clean seam. Assignments reach in every direction. A 1979 escape drama with Clint Eastwood based on a true story. King Ivory, streamed on WOW at two hours and ten minutes. A period piece with Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, narrated by a figure who guides the viewer toward the main character. Alongside the homework come fresh cinema reports — Hamnet, G.O.A.T., Ballerina — delivered as first impressions still warm from the seat. Comparison is the main analytical tool. A new assassin story gets weighed against the relentless pace of John Wick 4 and found more balanced at 125 minutes. Science fiction gets sorted into kinds, with one of them admitting a preference for the blunt, confrontational version over spaceship-and-alien trappings, then citing an earlier discussion of Das Ding as the counterexample that changed his mind. Verdicts arrive as numbers out of ten, and a five is handed over without apology when a film feels longer than it is and a lead performance does not land. The conversation circles. A point gets made, challenged, then restated from a slightly different angle, which is what makes it sound like listening in rather than being presented to. Interviews appear occasionally and shift the register. When documentary director Judith Beuth came on to discuss Der Wunsch, the questions turned to craft — how weeks of sifting reduced an enormous body of footage into a 105-minute film, and how the story of wanting a child had to stay in balance with the relationship at its centre. Even then the tone stays grounded, with them describing themselves as people who simply watch films. Episodes close on housekeeping: holiday plans, whether next week will happen, an encouragement to get to the cinema. Background noise is left in when children are awake. The result is a film show that trades polish for the texture of a real, ongoing conversation.
