Jeff Katz

Jeff Katz is local talk radio in its most caffeinated form. The show begins with weather, time checks, and Friday rituals, then barrels into whatever has the room worked up. Politics is a major engine. Recent episodes hammer Virginia gun legislation, gerrymandering, elected officials, voter turnout, and the practical questions behind proposed restrictions. The style is not neutral briefing. It is argument, listener challenge, mock dialogue, and repetition until the point lands. That said, the show’s local identity matters just as much as its politics. A fight over Texas Inn relish becomes a civic victory story. Frozen custard, WrestleMania, Short Pump, West Broad, Hanover, Chesterfield, and the James River Air text line all sit comfortably beside legislative outrage. The show treats listener texts as live fuel. A message can become a joke, a rebuttal, a new example, or the next sharp turn. There is also a sincere public-service streak under the bluster. Segments with Mary Bowman focus on emergency communications work, the pressure on dispatchers, and the emotional aftermath of calls they may never see resolved. The Friday visits with Stan Andruski bring in auto talk, community sports, youth teams, and neighborhood camaraderie. Regular station business is part of the experience, from contests and phone numbers to upcoming guests and WRVA anniversary promotions. That radio-clock machinery can be heavy, but it also gives the show its lived-in pace. Jeff Katz works best when the listener wants opinionated Richmond-area talk that is personal, impatient, locally specific, and willing to swing from a serious public safety tribute to a food tangent in the same breath.
