About Hit Factory
Hit Factory is a conversational film criticism show centered on the stubborn political life of 1990s cinema. It uses individual films as entry points into much larger arguments. The show is funny first, until it suddenly is not. A casual setup can become a close reading of animal imagery in Hyenas, a debate about intimacy and social discipline in Splendor, or a discussion of how documentary form can restore the lived pressure of the WTO protests in Seattle. Aaron and Carly appear repeatedly in the excerpts, with episodes also making room for guests. The rhythm is loose and quick. The thinking is not. Hit Factory is at its best when it lets aesthetic details carry political weight: glass brick architecture, red carpet fashion, landscape, performance, logistics, desire, and the way institutions make private life feel smaller. It is not limited to plot recap or canon worship. The show cares about what films do inside culture, how they absorb historical forces, and why old images still feel unresolved. Its taste is broad enough to move from Guy Maddin and Gregg Araki to Djibril Diop Mambety, Terrence Davies, and archival political documentary. The guests deepen that range without turning the conversations formal. Caroline Golum’s appearance opens onto medieval exchange, empire, and contemporary shipping logic. Ian Bell and Alex Megaro’s WTO99 interview centers protest, corporate power, police response, and media framing. The show’s humor can be blunt, but the editorial engine is serious. It wants movies to matter as objects of pleasure and evidence. It also assumes the audience can keep up. That makes Hit Factory feel like a film-club argument after midnight: crowded with references, suspicious of easy consensus, and alive to the politics hiding in style.
Made for: For cinephiles who like criticism with political stakes, quick jokes, and serious attention to form. It suits listeners comfortable with dense references, guest-driven conversations, and film talk that keeps reaching beyond the screen.
What sets it apart: Hit Factory stands apart by treating 1990s films as evidence of larger social systems rather than as comfort objects. Its conversations move fluidly between scene-level interpretation, contemporary politics, and the material conditions behind culture.
