About Hello Old Sports
Hello Old Sports approaches sports history through memory, research, and easy back-and-forth. Dan Newman and Andrew Newman sound most at home when a topic gives them both facts to sort and feelings to admit. The show covers major sports without locking itself to one league. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and soccer-network material all appear in the orbit. Some episodes take a calendar view, as with a survey of 1923 in sports. Others narrow the lens to a single franchise stretch, such as the post-Gibbs Redskins years from 2009 to 2024. The random-team format gives the show a lighter gear. A team and year get selected, then the episode follows whatever history that pairing opens up. That can mean the 1989 Green Bay Packers. It can also mean a stray complaint about drawing too many 2000s NFL teams. The hosts are comfortable letting fandom show. Their New York sports background surfaces in asides, grief, and jokes without turning every topic into local nostalgia. Memorial episodes bring a more reflective mode. The 2023 In Memoriam specials discuss sports figures who died that year and spend time on careers, honors, playoff context, and legacy. Dave Wilcox, the San Francisco 49ers, Pro Bowls, All-Pro selections, and postseason losses to the Dallas Cowboys become part of that historical accounting. Guest episodes broaden the frame. The conversation with author Keith O'Brien connects Larry Bird, Indiana State, Boston fandom, and the hosts' own sports loyalties. The show is not polished into a museum tour. Sponsor sketches, Sports History Network promos, holiday timing, and recording-day digressions stay visible. That looseness is part of the appeal. Hello Old Sports works best for listeners who want sports history carried by people who care about the record, remember the heartbreak, and still enjoy arguing through the details.
Made for: For fans who like old seasons, franchise arcs, athlete legacies, and sports-history conversations that still feel personal. It especially suits listeners comfortable moving between research-heavy episodes and looser fandom-driven formats.
What sets it apart: The show pairs historical sports analysis with a brotherly, conversational rhythm, moving from memorial tributes to random-team challenges without losing the factual spine. Its New York fan perspective adds personality while the topic range stays broad.
In their own words
Each week on “Hello, Old Sports” Andrew and Dan Neumann examine a different sports history topic—baseball, basketball, football, hockey, boxing, and anything else that comes to mind. We’ll travel back to 1920 to relive the founding of the Negro Leagues and Babe Ruth’s first season with the New York Yankees. Or to 1967 to relive the closing drive of the “Ice Bowl” between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. Maybe even all the way back to 1884 and the first “World Series” between the Providence Grays of the National League and the New York Metropolitans of the American Association.
