Gen X nostalgia with gadgets still plugged in.

The gist

GenXGrownUp Podcast is a conversational retro-culture show built around the stuff that shaped Gen X life: payphones, pagers, passing notes, albums, pinball, and movie memories. It is warm, specific, and happily tangent-prone.

About GenXGrownUp Podcast

GenXGrownUp Podcast is a loose, good-humored tour through the media, games, tech, toys, and pop-culture habits that shaped Gen X life. It does not treat nostalgia as a sealed display case. It treats it as something people still argue about, buy, repair, rewatch, quote, and compare against the present. The show can linger on payphones, pagers, passing notes, emergency change, and the once-serious cost of long-distance calls. Then it can swing into Chuck Norris films, martial-arts movie history, a new sci-fi film, MagSafe phone accessories, or an 80 percent scale crowdfunding pinball machine. That range is the point. The voices sound like people with long memories, a lot of accumulated trivia, and enough comfort with each other to interrupt, correct, tease, and keep moving. The pace is brisk, but not slick. A gadget discussion can get surprisingly practical, as with projector features, travel routers, HDMI ports, autofocus, and keystone correction. A media conversation can stay grounded in how people actually consumed things, like leaving an LP running long enough to find the last track on side B. Interviews and special editions widen the frame without leaving the lane, including conversations around Steve Spears and Stuck in the '80s and Michael Weitz and We Be Dragons. The show also makes room for theater, books, geek gift ideas, gaming hardware, and box office memory. Its humor is usually conversational rather than performed. Quick ribbing, callbacks, and small factual detours give the show its texture. It is not trying to be an academic history of a generation. It is closer to an ongoing field report from people who remember the objects, prices, rituals, and media moments because they lived around them. That makes the show useful for listeners who want more than a list of references. It explains why the reference had a shape in daily life. A payphone was not just a prop. An album side was not just a format. A cheap projector is not just a gadget. GenXGrownUp Podcast is strongest when it connects those details to the way entertainment, communication, and fandom changed.

Made for: Suits a listener who wants retro games, movies, tech, toys, and media remembered through concrete details rather than polished nostalgia. It also suits someone who enjoys friendly banter and side paths that still circle back to the topic.

What sets it apart: The show stands out by mixing then-versus-now memory with hands-on geek curiosity: payphones and LPs share space with MagSafe accessories, projectors, pinball, and crowdfunding gear. It feels lived-in rather than packaged.

In their own words

Generation X. If you grew up in the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, you know just how cool it was to be a kid back then. We had the greatest music, movies, games, technology, and pop culture of any generation, and though we've grown older, we have refused to outgrow our love of everything GenX. GenXGrownUp looks at yesterday and today through the eyes of Generation X'ers who have refused to grow up!

Press play if you want

  • to remember why emergency change mattered, even if the long-distance bill still hurts
