One question a week, explained properly.
The gist
Each week the show picks a single question — how rivers are restored, why astronomy reshaped how societies think, what a political interview is really doing — and works through it with someone who knows the field. The conversations run long, the jargon gets translated as it appears, and the goal stated on air is simply to understand the world a little better every week.

About Erklär mir die Welt
The premise is simple and stated out loud every week: help listeners understand the world a bit better than they did seven days ago. Each episode takes one subject and one guest who knows it properly. The questioning is patient. It starts broad, then keeps narrowing until something concrete arrives — a number, a mechanism, a before-and-after. Specialist vocabulary is not avoided, but it rarely stands alone. It gets restated in plain language, often with a comparison a non-specialist can hold onto. The range of subjects is wide. An astronomy episode with Eva Freistetter opens out into the history of scientific dissent, from Galileo being killed for saying something did not fit to a modern posture where a mismatch is treated as an opportunity to learn, and then into what astronomy meant for the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the industrial world that followed. An episode with Sarah Höfler on saving rivers goes the other direction entirely, down into detail: the gradations of renaturalisation, from adding a few structures to a monotonous channel in a built-up area all the way to relocating a stream back into its natural course, and why every species has different requirements. An episode with Armin Wolf turns the lens on the craft of political interviewing — verifying a claim about party polling after the fact, and the particular temperament required not to mind whether studio guests like you. There is an episode with Julia Shaw on bisexuality. The show is Austrian and unembarrassed about it, with references to Vienna, the Prater, and public science events in the city. Two live recordings at the Lange Nacht der Forschung are announced, both free to attend, one at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and one at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Around the interviews sits a genuine community apparatus. A listener of the month is introduced at the top of episodes, with a short profile and photo posted on the show's site and a small thank-you sent out. Listener meet-ups get floated. Update episodes step outside the format to talk about how the podcast is actually made, including a frank discussion of why video would raise the barrier for participation and why audio suits the community better. Sponsors, the marketing partners, and the listeners who fund the project are thanked at the close, with no pretence that the show would exist without them. Two voices sign off across different episodes — Katharina on some, David on others — and a third, Andreas, is named as the one conducting the live conversations. The tone stays steady even when the subject is serious. Nothing is hurried, nothing is dramatised, and the closing line is the mission restated.
Made for: German-speaking listeners, especially in Austria, who want more than a headline and are happy to stay with one subject at length. It suits people who like their science, environment, and media questions explained carefully rather than argued loudly.
What sets it apart: Most explainer shows compress; this one expands, letting a specialist talk at length while the questioning quietly translates and re-anchors. The community layer is unusually real — a named listener of the month, free live recordings in Vienna, and episodes that openly discuss how the podcast is made and funded.
In their own words
