Disability news, tested against real life.

The gist

DisNewsYouKnow UK Podcast tracks disability news through a blunt UK policy lens. Benefits upratings, PIP reviews, back-to-work schemes, transport access, social care, and underreported disabled lives become evidence in a wider argument about systems that promise inclusion while leaving people to fight for basics.

About DisNewsYouKnow UK Podcast

DisNewsYouKnow UK Podcast is built around disability news that rarely gets sustained attention in mainstream coverage. Its center of gravity is UK policy. Episodes usually begin with a story from government, parliament, a news outlet, a report, or a consultation, then widen into a practical argument about what the policy means for disabled people. The style is solo and spoken-through. It is not tidy punditry. The show circles back, repeats pressure points, and keeps asking whether the official story matches lived experience. Benefits are a major through-line, especially PIP, carers allowance, attendance allowance, uprating figures, and the fear that assessment rules can punish people for the complexity of their own conditions. The Timms Review becomes less a procedural event than a test of whether user experience will actually carry weight. Back-to-work schemes are treated with similar caution. Positive language around coaching, job matching, and employment support is set beside concern about conditionality, AI, economic pressure, and systems that may still start from suspicion. Transport access is another core subject. Debates, accessibility reports, bus and rail barriers, and weak enforcement all feed one repeated question: what is a right worth without real consequences for failure? The show also connects disability policy to social care, housing, education, EHCP reform, family access in care settings, and the cost of living. Its international offshoot broadens the frame with stories about digital public services, care law, tech, and disabled leadership in AI design. The editorial instinct is skeptical but not detached. Small increases in support are acknowledged, then tested against the wider climate. The show is strongest when it names the gap between a public promise and the messy work of surviving it. It assumes familiarity with policy language. It also assumes that disabled people are not passive recipients of systems, but people with expertise, strategy, and political memory. The result is a plainspoken disability-news capsule with a campaigning nerve.

Made for: For people following UK disability policy, benefits, access, transport, care, and welfare reform from a lived-experience perspective. It also suits campaigners, carers, policy watchers, and disabled people who want detail without institutional polish.

What sets it apart: The show does not treat policy as abstract paperwork. It reads official announcements and public debates through the practical question of whether disabled people gain power, access, security, or just another process to survive.

In their own words

Welcome to the DisNewsYouKNow Podcast, the aim of this sound capsule is to talk about disability news in the UK. To explore the stories and give a little analysis. Although there are news sites out there for disability news, Disability News Service springs to mind. Disabled people and news that affects our lives is still underreported and generally as many of us already know we are underrepresented in the media. So the aim of this podcast is a little effort to try and address this balance.

Benefits, debates and more back to work schemesApr 9, 2026

A rough-edged policy piece that keeps returning to the cost of exclusion.

This review follows a discussion of the 2026-2027 benefit uprating, set out as a 3.8 percent increase linked to September 2025 inflation figures and carried through to several disability-related payments.

episode 14Mar 10, 2026

A blunt, lived-in look at policy, access, and why progress keeps stalling.

Vaughan frames government employment support as a question of access, not just announcement language. The discussion moves from the Connect to Work rollout to transport barriers, and its strength is in staying close to lived reality instead of drifting into policy phrasing.

episode 15Mar 10, 2026

EHCP reform, a House of Lords row, and a forceful case for treating disability support as a public duty.

DisNewsYouKnow UK episode 15 follows a familiar fault line in disability policy, moving from a Guardian opinion piece on a House of Lords debate into a longer look at EHCP reform, the White Paper due later this year, and the way saving money keeps shadowing children s support.

The welfare reform bill passes parliament vote - what now for the disability community?Mar 5, 2026

A welfare vote opens into a wider argument about disability, stigma, and how support should work.

It opens on a welfare vote and keeps the focus on the final reading, where the bill passes after 47 Labour MPs rebel and further concessions are made, with the deep cuts to personal independence payments no longer at the center.
