DERELICT is a science fiction audio drama that starts with a discovery on the ocean floor. An energy company digs up what turns out to be a door, and it becomes known as the vault. One character has a blunt read on it: whatever is on the other side is not friendly, and it is trying to get out. That is the hook. Everything else builds out from it. A recap episode, 'DERELICT WAR - Series Recap and Crowdfund Launched', strings together clipped, urgent scenes: a ship lost in an explosion, a shout for everyone to hold on, and someone insisting they are not a leader while being told it will come down to them. It gives a newcomer a feel for the stakes, and the first season, FATHOM, is the natural starting point for the full story. The third season, Derelict War, is where the conflict comes into the open. Its trailer asks about a figure called Dr. Graff and settles on a grim definition of war: two sides sharing the belief that a life is a price worth paying. The lines are spare and heavy. Alongside the main story runs Agent Blaine, who gets his own standalone bonus season, The Traveler, made for crowdfund backers and planned for release ahead of Season 3. Michael Mao voices Blaine. One update begins with a brief, wry scene in which a nervous voice recognizes Blaine and asks for a gun to be pointed somewhere else. The Traveler tracks Blaine's movements across the galaxy as he works toward reaching the Traveler, and JBM says it takes the series into factions and places it has not visited before. JBM, who is writing The Traveler scripts, presents these updates directly. The register is the opposite of the fiction: chatty, grateful and openly excited, and at one point JBM thanks people for listening to the rambling. The updates also show how the show gets made. They cover the Kickstarter, reward tiers, stretch goals, concept art, late pledges, and an early, uninterrupted version of Season 3 for backers. They describe the Ghost Route Log, an add-on of star maps, schematics and Blaine's handwritten notes on each operation leading up to a desperate mission called the Traveler Run. A teaser mentions a screen capture from a place called Scimitar. JBM also talks about bringing in a sound designer and editor with film, television and prestige audio experience, so that episodes arrive faster without losing the depth of sound design treated as the standard. The feed also carries editions of Derelict Presents, which share other fiction audio series the team admires. One features The No Sleep Podcast, with a horror story about a child desperate to recover a missing diary before anyone reads further. So the feed offers two things: a mystery that begins at a door on the ocean floor, and an open, running account of the audience-funded work behind it.
