About Box Office Receipts

Box Office Receipts is a film-industry news roundup built around host Tyler Callahan and a running order that rarely changes. Episodes open with the domestic top five: what opened where, what dropped, and the running totals, all read out in quick succession. After that the show turns to the business side. Films in development, the directors and writers attached to them, casting news and trailers each get their own section, usually in compact blocks with a source named up front, often Deadline. Deaths get a brief, respectful note before the rundown moves on. Then comes VOD Premium, the streaming section. Callahan says he added it during the pandemic, when there was little box office to report through 2020 and into 2021. That section has covered Disney starting its password crackdown on Disney Plus and AMC renewing its Daryl Dixon series for a third season, with production set in Spain. Corporate stories run alongside the film news: episode titles include 'Ep. 300 - Sony Pictures CEO is stepping down' and 'Ep. 299 - Sky sues Warner Bros. Discovery', and the same stretch covers DirecTV looking to buy Dish. Fan conventions feed the show too. San Diego Comic-Con, with its Marvel news, and Disney's D23 each supplied a batch of stories, the second under the title 'Ep. 292 - The Incredibles 3 is real and other news from D23'. His read on the D23 slate shows how he comments: a lineup heavy on sequels is what die-hard Disney fans want, he says, though he would like to see more original films. His asides are brief. A live-action CGI Rugrats film gets a dry 'I have no idea how that is going to go, but okay.' The first Thunderbolts trailer, he says, actually looks good, and Twisters is flagged for a surprisingly strong opening. When a number needs explaining, he takes more time. In 'Ep. 254 - The Marvels crashes in debut', he covers what he calls the lowest MCU opening ever, middling reviews, a B CinemaScore and weak word of mouth, and argues that audiences now turn out for MCU releases only when the reviews are great. That episode is the best place to hear the show analyse rather than list. For the usual format, from the chart through to trailers, Ep. 299 or Ep. 300 are good examples. One caveat: in an episode titled 'Box Office Receipts is coming to an end', Callahan announced he was ending the podcast, at least for now. He did not rule out a return and said he would keep posting about the news on Bluesky, Threads and Substack.

Made for: Suits a listener who wants the domestic box office chart, development deals, trailers and streaming business read out quickly and plainly, with brief opinions rather than long debate.

What sets it apart: It keeps a fixed running order, with the domestic top five first and a VOD Premium streaming block later, and names its source for each item. The host sticks to quick verdicts unless a number, like The Marvels' opening, needs a real explanation.
