About Aging in Style with Lori Williams

Aging in Style is a practical show about senior care, hosted by Lori Williams, an award-winning senior living expert, author, and educator. She is also caregiver to her husband, Mark, a stroke survivor, and she has been doing that for three years. Both roles are audible in every episode. The professional half explains what actually distinguishes levels of care, and why families tend to call every option a nursing home. The caregiver half admits what the days are really like. In one episode she describes running a household, a medical unit, a therapy center, a scheduling department, and a business at the same time, keeping track of which therapist is arriving on which day. The show's structure is tidy and easy to use. Topics get broken into short parts so a listener can take one idea from each. A recent three-part run tackled the questions that surface after holiday visits with older relatives, beginning with how to tell a genuine decline from ordinary aging. The second part built out plan A, plan B, and plan C, with an argument for touring communities before anyone needs one. The third turned to winter, covering seasonal depression, isolation, the loss of driving, and planning for weather a region is not equipped to handle. That episode includes a story about Mark driving through ice to deliver an oxygen tank to a woman's mother in a senior apartment and carrying it up an iced-over outdoor staircase. Elsewhere the show is happy to be purely useful. A gift guide ran through fifty ideas for someone in senior housing, grouped by price, with reasons attached. Something to keep cold feet warm, because circulation slows with age and falls matter. A motion sensor nightlight. A weighted lap throw that can calm restlessness. A large print clock showing day, date, and time to cut down on confusion for someone with dementia. Another episode reframes the word-of-the-year exercise for caregivers, landing on boundaries and the argument that a caregiver has less spare capacity than almost anyone and therefore needs them more. Williams's delivery is conversational and unpolished in a good way, with asides, self-interruptions, and the occasional laugh at her own expense. She repeats the things she wants remembered. She does not soften a warning to make it easier to hear. The recurring refrain is finding the silver lining regardless of what arrives, paired with a harder instruction to thrive rather than merely survive. After 276 episodes the podcast entered a hiatus while Williams develops resources meant to help families nationally rather than only in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with the same stated mission of guiding people through aging without confusion.

Made for: Family caregivers and adult children trying to work out what a parent or spouse needs next, plus older adults planning their own housing and care. Useful to anyone who has come home from a holiday visit uneasy about what they saw.

What sets it apart: Most senior care advice comes from either a professional or a caregiver; Williams is both at once, so an episode can move from touring communities to the exhaustion of scheduling a spouse's therapy appointments without changing register.
