Zen Community of Oregon Dharma Talks

Generosity Without Separation - Jomon Martin, Zen Teacher

·34 min·3 clips
Shantideva shows you can imagine giving luxurious offerings you don't own to cultivate a generous heart.
A new room matters here. The talk begins with gratitude for the community's Sanzen space and the plain joy of practicing together in person. From there, it opens toward bodhisattva action. How does a suffering realm get held without drawing a hard line between helper and helped? Difference remains, but the teaching keeps nudging at the possibility of seeing ourselves as we, not only as us and them. Dana is the doorway. Dogen asks for a broad mind, one that can trust flowers to the wind and birds to the season. Letting be can give. That turns the usual grasping impulse around, because generosity is not measured only by the obvious value of what changes hands. Even dust can count. Offered with a genuinely giving heart, the practice is worth quiet rejoicing. The image keeps opening: flowers blooming on distant mountains are given to the Tathagata, and the point is left spacious rather than pinned down. Practice comes back to the body. Sitting and breathing are enough places to ask what is being given, what is being offered, and how generosity might appear now. No tidy answer is needed. The question itself becomes a way of receiving this human life with less separation and more service. The tone is gentle, slow, and steady: how can generosity happen before anything special is done?

As heard by us

Generosity is treated as a lived practice of attention, from the new sanzen room to the closing question about what is being offered now.

The piece begins with community housekeeping: the long-awaited sanzen room, gratitude for the people who helped practice get underway, and plans for a first-year birthday party.
