Season 4 Episode 1: The Body Snatchers

January 13, 2022·40 min·3 clips
Antigone wakes up inside a coffin, nearly getting buried alive at a rival's funeral.
This episode follows the rival funeral directors of Piffling Vale, Rudyard and Antigone Funn and their competitor Eric Chapman, after a disastrous funeral service. The hosts are the core cast of the sitcom, with Rudyard and Antigone running the struggling Funn Funerals and Eric Chapman operating the successful, cheerful alternative. Their morning begins with a major blunder when they nearly bury Antigone, who had fallen asleep in the wrong coffin, instead of the deceased Professor Bertie Oblomoff. The mishap leads to public ridicule, a mocking poll on Piffling FM, and a heated argument where both Rudyard and Antigone temporarily quit the family business. Eric Chapman unexpectedly visits Funn Funerals to confess he lost a sentimental identity bracelet, which he believes fell into one of three coffins he recently buried. He secretly enlists the Funns and their assistant Georgie to help him exhume all three coffins that night to retrieve it. Antigone negotiates a price for their help: Eric must cease all funeral operations for a full month, giving Funn Funerals a temporary monopoly. The group splits into pairs to dig up the coffins in the cemetery and a submerged coffin in Lake Chapman. Antigone and Eric grapple with guilt and their competitive history while digging, and they are nearly discovered by Reverend Wavering. Rudyard and Georgie, while fishing for a coffin, are confronted by the retired detective Agatha Doyle. At the final coffin in the McGregor family mausoleum, Antigone learns Eric's family handled all previous McGregor funerals, highlighting her own professional decline. When Agatha Doyle corners the whole group, Antigone improvises a story that frames the Funns as the culprits and Eric as a heroic intervener, which Doyle accepts. The plan secures their secret and guarantees the Funns their month without Chapman's competition. Eric reveals he was already planning to streamline his business and focus solely on funerals, meaning the Funns' "victory" is hollow. The recovered bracelet bears an inscribed name that is not Eric Chapman's, a secret observed by the mouse Madeleine. The tone is a fast-paced, darkly comedic farce full of verbal sparring and physical mishaps. Its style blends witty dialogue, absurd situations, and a narrative framed by the memoirs of a funeral housemouse. Fans of British sitcoms, character-driven humor, and stories about eccentric rivalries will enjoy this episode. Listeners who prefer straightforward plots or lack context from previous seasons might find the large cast and inside jokes confusing.

As heard by us

A graveyard job turns Eric Chapman and Antigone's rivalry into a neatly cruel little comedy of errors.

The episode turns a graveyard job into a small, uneasy embarrassment for Eric Chapman and Antigone, with Piffling Vale once again split by funeral-home rivalry and village scrutiny. The fun is in the sparring.
