565 – Hating on Harvey?

·1 hr 14 min·5 clips
Marc discovers Harvey's new miter gauge has a fundamental design flaw that allows 12 thousandths of movement.
It opens loose, with the panel tripping through the show-number intro, Rockler giveaway copy, and Patreon reminder before the listener questions take over. The bench is full: power jointers versus jointer planes, finished shop walls, smoothing-plane picks, and some Harvey regret. Harvey gets the sharpest treatment. One host says the issues showed up within about 10 minutes, which makes the whole thing sound less mysterious and more avoidable. Nobody frames it as complicated. Their point is simpler than that: a basic setup, or even a normal Internet unboxing video, should have caught the obvious bad stuff early. The review blowback still has heat on it. People defended the first complaints so hard that the later fixes became awkward evidence against them. The panel's logic is blunt. If those things were never problems, why change them? There is a little room for grace. The host admits a fully new version can be sold as new and improved, not just patched after the fact. Still, the advice is plain enough. Pay someone to review the tool hard before it ships. Free samples get the side-eye too. The panel does not put much faith in reviews from people who seem grateful to be sent something and too polite to push back. By the end, the show drifts back to the inbox, where listener questions are both the fuel and the excuse not to invent a topic from scratch.

As heard by us

Blunt shop talk with a slow start and a useful look at tool regrets.

Wood Talk spends this hour on power jointers versus jointer planes, finishing shop walls, which smoothing plane earns its keep, and the kind of Harvey purchases that later look less wise than they did in the moment.
